Just because you’re a walking corpse doesn’t mean you can’t deck out your rotting body parts with fine, beautiful jewelry. Slight Jewelry has answered your zombie jewelry needs with a Braaains collection featuring undead heads and zombie apocalypse weapons made from gold, silver and brass.
I know they say diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but I’d rather be besties with a black diamond stuffed in a golden zombie’s mouth.

Interview with Amanda of Slight Jewelry

GGG: Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
Amanda: I grew up in sunny Tucson, Arizona, the home of the Gem and Mineral Show.  I was what my teacher called a “rock hound,” I sure did love those geodes. As a kid, I wasn’t an ugly duckling, I just had ” interesting features.”  One of which has dictated a nickname that I embrace to this day: Fangs.  I am missing two teeth where my canines meet so I literally have two fangs.  Although the goth boys loved them, I was very self-conscious about them for a very long time. I was constantly asked, “Do you sharpen your teeth?”  Anyway, fast forward past puberty and college, I ventured to Colorado where I finally learned to love my fangs.  I lived there for 5 years though the wacky weather and countless serving jobs.  I wanted to work in fashion and knew Denver wasn’t the place to fulfill that dream.   With the support of my older twin sisters, I made the leap to New York City about a year and a half ago.  It was extremely difficult at first but I had a vision: Make something as unique as my teeth, and I think have succeeded in that!

How long have you been making jewelry?
A little over two years but I’ve been sketching ideas for a decade.

Slight Jewelry- Zombie Black Diamond EarringIs there a film, book or game got your into zombies and horror and why?
If you exclude reading every Steven King book before I had any idea what it was about, I would say that I have always loved “Evil Dead” and the campy yet endearing horror movies of the 70s and 80. Although, I like to mix in some scary ones here and there.  The movie “Alien” is the best sci-fi horror film of all time – such incredible set design and makeup!  And the zombies, how can I forget about the zombies?  For humor’s sake, I choose “Shaun of the Dead” and on the other end of the spectrum “Resident Evil” Because who doesn’t love Mila Jovovich?
What’s Slight Jewelry’s origin story?
I worked for a fine jewelry designer for over a year and it was quite the eye opening experience.  There wasn’t anything out there for my personality so I decided to make it myself.  I wanted to make jewelry that I liked and that I hadn’t seen anywhere else.  The Zombie Collection is my first collection and I will continue to add to it.  It’s my zombie baby. :)
Which have been some of your favorite pieces to make?
I absolutely love the clown zombie cufflinks, so dear to my heart.  And the mix and match zombie earrings with the zombie weapon of choice.
Do you have any (other) geeky obsessions? If so what?
3D printing- a lot of my pieces are 3D printed and then cast in silver and gold.  It’s incredible to have a plastic iteration that I can print right before my very eyes!  It also gives the jewelry some great texture and depth.
What’s your zombie weapon of choice? Slight Jewelry- Zombie Weapon of Choice- Axe Earring
It would have to be a machine gun with a bayonet mounting, double trouble.  If the zombie apocalypse struck, and I didn’t own a bayonet-mount machine gun, I would use the hand painted zombie axe I bought my boyfriend for his birthday.  Sharing is caring.
If you were on a deserted island what video game, comic/book, movie, TV show would you bring?
This is a toughy.  I have an amazing HR Giger book that I can’t live without.  And if I only brought a video game, movie, or TV show, I wouldn’t have anything to play them on!  But if I could bring two items (and this island had a TV), I would bring my first version Atari and the game, Pitfall.  So many memories with that game!

Rigamortis: A Zombie Love Story

I love zombies and musicals, but never in my wildest dreams did I think someone would create a zombie musical! Rigamortis: A Zombie Love Story is just what you’d image a zombie musical would be campy, bloody, funny and of course an obligatory “Thriller’ish” dance. If you liked Dr. Horrible or Reefer Madness then Rigamortis is definitely worth a shot (no pun intended… okay it was intended).

“After humanity quells an undead uprising, the last two remaining zombies pair up in search of sanctuary, but instead find love.

Rigamortis takes place shortly after humanity has put down a recent zombie outbreak.  The last two zombies left “undead” are looking for their place in the world, while one lonely zombie hunter’s newfound fame and glory can’t fill the hole in his heart left by the recent loss of his now undead love. The characters are forced to confront zombies, angry mobs, double-barreled shotguns, and an ever-dangerous thing called love, until fate brings them all face to face in an explosive finale.[Rigamortismovie.com]”

This musical gives me a tinge of guilt now that I think back to every zombie I shot in the head assuming it wanted my brains but it might have just wanted… love. This 40 minute low-budget musical is available to watch in full length for a limited time via YouTube. Who knew the undead could carry a tune?!

Zombie Stationery

I would revert back to the old-fashioned ways of *gasp* hand writing letters if they could be done on this too-cool-for-words zombie stationery. Not only are they gory but designed exceptionally well. I went through to mild bought of depression when I realized these weren’t for sale.

They were created by Behance Network for the German crime and horror cable channel 13th Street which is now their official stationery.

Geeky Holiday Gifts- Zombie Pinup Calendars

***some images may NSFW because these undead ladies are missing flesh and some articles of clothing***

The holidays season is upon us and the hunt is on for the perfect gifts for our friends, family and most importantly for ourselves.  This month I’ll be posting all sorts of geeky gifts to get for you and yours.

The first to be featured is the Zombie’s ‘Gorgeous and Gory’ 2011 Zombie Pinup Calendar created by the New Jersey Zombie Walk. Hot pinup zombie girls, what more can you ask for?!  They only cost $20, you can order yours here.

“The bloodiest beauties of the Zombie Walk are crawling out of the Asbury Park debris and onto 12 titillating pages of post-apocalpytic planning in this limited edition calendar!

Be the first zombie on your street to have these lovely, lacerated ladies hanging on your wall!”

‘Gorgeous and Gory’

My Zombie Pinup also did a calendar in 2009 and 2010, you can see some of the images from their calendars below.  Unfortunately, they do not seem to be doing a calendar this year but they make some great screen savers! If you want the 2010 calendar it’s only $3.99!

“Where beauty eats brains!”

Picture of the Week- The Walking Dead

The Walking Dead premiered last night and I couldn’t watch it because I was busy saving the princess with Mario (see slideshow below) so I’ll watch later today.  The Walking Dead is based on the Robert Kirkman comic by the same name.  I’ve been excited about this show since I first heard about it.  Primarily, (if not only) because I love what AMC has been doing lately with TV and it has zombies in it and you already know how I feel about them.

I recently read The Waking Dead Compendium One and damn near cried at the end (don’t worry no spoilers). I always forget it is very common that people actually die in zombie apocalypses.  It’s just hard to get used to when you come to love the characters so much.  I highly suggest it to anyone, whether you read comics or not.

Now the character below is Michonne, she isn’t in the show yet and probably won’t be for this season.  But all the readers know how absolutely bad ass Michonne is!  She’s a sword wielding, zombie killing, the hardest of cores, one woman army!  For an example of her bad assness look at this picture on how she first enters the comic.  She is practically straight off a Tarantino film and I can’t wait until she is in the show.

Picture of the Week is made by ElicaDragon on DeviantArt check out her DeviantArt here and her The Walking Dead art here.
