Tattoo Tuesday Featurette- My Neil Gaiman ‘Sandman’ Tattoo

Jamila Girl Gone Geek Sandman comic book tattoo Neil Gaiman Fear of Falling 4

As many of you know by now, I’m a very big fan of the writer Neil Gaiman. The entry-level Gaiman drug of choice for me was the comic series Sandman. If you’ve read it, you already know just how utterly brilliant it is. It’s one of those series that’s masterfully blends myth, mystery and mind-blowing stories. It is easily one of my top favorite comic book series. Despite my many Tattoo Tuesday posts I blog about, only 2 out of my 6 tattoos can be called “geeky”. Now I love looking at geeky ink, but for me to decide to get something tattooed on my body (forever), it had to hit me on several levels, and that’s what this quote from Sandman did.

Neil Gaiman Sandman Fear of FallingNow Sandman is a pretty long series, but I remember the day I read “Fear of Falling” vividly. It’s one of the few things I’ve read that gave me actual goosebumps. The quote is, “Sometimes you wake up. Sometimes the fall kills you. And sometimes, when you fall, you fly.” This is a loaded quote for me because I have a mini obsession about dreams, so it hits me on that level easily. But more importantly, it’s a constant reminder to myself not to limit what I do in life because I’m afraid of failure.

A few years later, I finally decided to get the quote inked, but then I had to find a tattoo artist. Because my tattoo was a quote from a comic, I wanted someone who would “get” the significance to tattoo me. That’s when I met the talented lolita geek tattoo artist, Imani. Well, we met on the internet first, as many people do nowadays, through my friends Otakus & Geeks. Finally, at NYCC last year we met in person. I spotted her adorable pastel-colored locks in a sea of cosplayers and it was like we were old friends meeting again. That’s when I decided I’d wait for the chance for Imani to tattoo me. A couple of months ago, she came back to NYC and it finally happened! She’s a talented illustrator and I wanted to use her superpowers to create a custom tattoo for me. She literally sketched out the quote on my back before tattooing. Of course, I couldn’t be happier with tattoo and the experience. Thanks, girl!

Tattoo Tuesday: The Walking Dead

The Walking Dead comic is one of the few series that constantly stresses me out. With complex and interesting characters thrown into unbearable situations, there’s bound to be some emotions involved. And for me, it has been all of them. Issue 100 left me devastated for days, to say the least. I still don’t like to talk about it. (Obsessed much?!)

Although my opinion of the comic and TV show waivers from positive to negative at times, my love for The Walking Dead always remains.

And to think that I thought I was a huge fan of The Walking Dead!

I include all the information about each tattoo that was available. If you’re interested in your tattoo being featured on a past or future Tattoo Tuesday or Tattoo Tuesday Featurette, email me at jamila[@]girlgonegeekblog[.]com.

Tattoo Tuesday Featurette- My 8-bit Heart Tattoo and My Brother’s Zelda and Megaman Tattoos

Me and my brother Myles matching 8-bit heart tattoos (my tattoo is on the right)

My brother Myles and I are very close (but not Lannister close). He’s not just my brother, he’s my best friend. So when I found out he was interested in tattoos I suggested we get matching brother and sister tats. One day when I was looking at my blog mascot the 8-bit heart idea popped into my head. I asked Myles what he though, hoping that I finally found something that we both agreed on and he loved the idea. After months of us trying to figure out what to get tattooed, we finally figured it out!

Despite the countless Tattoo Tuesdays I’ve blogged about I didn’t have any geek-related tattoos of my own. Now I’m finally able to be featured on my own Tattoo Tuesday. I already know that my next tattoo will be a quote from Neil Gaiman’s Sandman comic series.

Myles being the boss that he is, got three tattoos his first time! He got the half filled 8-bit heart, a Megaman E-Tank and a Triforce from Zelda. Myles loves video games and he really likes Megaman and The Legend of Zelda.  We chose the 8-bit heart because it represents our love for games, geekery and our awesome sibling bond. Love you bro! Oh and follow him on twitter @rabble_rowser and me too @girl_gone_geek!

If you’re interested in being featured in a Tattoo Tuesday or Tattoo Tuesday Featurette please email me at girlgonegeekblog(@)gmail(dot)com.

My brother Myles got 3 tattoos on his arms, an E-Tank from Megaman, Triforce from Zelda and our matching 8-bit heart. It was done at Village Tattoo Pop in NYC by Diego.

My 8-bit heart tattoo on my ankle. It was done at Village Tattoo Pop in NYC by Christopher.

Tattoo Tuesday- Labyrinth

‘Ello! The Labyrinth (and The Dark Crystal) are some of my favorite things. Why you may ask? Well have you seen it before?! If not, I’ll do my best not to judge you and urge, no, tell you to watch it in all it’s Jim Henson, ’80s, David Bowieness fantastical glory.

I dedicate this Tattoo Tuesday my little brother Myles who loves this film as well. I would never wish the goblins to take you away Myles, I swears! Behold, Bowie the beautiful as Jareth the Goblin King, Jennifer Connelly as Sarah, slime and snails and puppy dog tails and all of your favorite characters from Labyrinth etched into the skins of die-hard fans. But hey, it will only be tattooed on their skin forever, not long at all

I include all the information about the tattoo that was available. If you are interested in having me feature your geeky tattoo on a future Tattoo Tuesday feel free to email me at girlgonegeekblog[at]gmail.com.

Tattoo Tuesday- Buffy, Angel and Whedon Oh My!

This weeks Tattoo Tuesday is dedicated to Buffy the Vampire Slayer one of the many blessings Joss Whedon has bestowed upon this great planet. Before the world was infiltrated by sparkly vampires, there was Buffy. While Buffy and the Scooby Gang were stakin’ vamps and takin’ names, the rest of the world fell in love. (Tattoo Tuesday-Firefly here)

“Check out reader Whitney’s brand-spankin’ new and hard core Whedonverse tattoo depicting Angelus’ narration from the episode “Passion” done in the Buffyfont! It took five straight hours and runs from underarm to hip. Kind of reminds us of Dark Willow’s skin when she’s sucking the books for magic in “Villains”, no? Anyway, how fabulous!
note: Whitney also has tats of the Buffy Season 8 Twilight symbol and Mutant Enemy monster. ” [Source: Buffyfest Blogspot]

Epicbookshelves’s Buffy quote tattoo on her leg:

“This is a quote from (the tv show) Buffy the Vampire Slayer. As soon as I heard it, I had to rewind and hear it again. I’m going through a divorce right now, and this quote really hit home with me. One thing I’ve decided and realized lately is that I don’t want to ignore that passion inside of me, whatever it may be in regards to. This is a reminder that I cannot supress my thoughts and feelings, desires, and passion for life. It’s a reminder to live the life I want. Also, it doesn’t hurt that I REALLY love Buffy. ETA: Done by Kyle at Platinum Ink, Austin TX.” [Source: 25hourbooks]

Mandi Kaye’s:

“So before everyone asks, let me explain the significance of “five by five.” I first heard the phrase years ago when Faith used it on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. She used it to mean that everything was good or okay. This past summer, I remembered it when I was trying to decide what kind of tattoo I wanted. I knew I wanted the tattoo to mean something. I decided I wanted it to represent the major change that was going on in my life – my crisis of faith. Even when my life was up in the air and I felt constant turmoil, I still had this overwhelming sense that everything was going to be okay. No matter what I chose – faith or no faith – it was going to be okay. That’s when I remembered the phrase “five by five.” I knew I would encorporate it into my tattoo somehow. At first, I tried to go for a larger more elaborate design, but in the end I chose simplicity. And I love it.” [Source: mandikaye.com]

Sharron’s Buffy quote tat:

“As a self confessed Buffy fan, I was more than a little stoked at getting to do this tattoo. It was a buffy geek fest while I was tattooing this. I nearly broke into songs from the musical a couple of times. So for Buffy geeks everywhere here you go”  [Source: Sharroncaudill]

It’s about 1 1/2 inches tall and is on the inside of her right ankle. Tattoo Tuesday- Pokémon

I grew up watching the original Pokémon series. I’d be glued to the TV singing along with gusto, “I’m going to be the very best, like no one ever was!”. And dramatically reciting the Team Rocket motto along with Jessie, James and of course Meowth.

Well our dear little television show about cute (and not so cute) pocket monsters has grown to epic proportions. Pokémon is the second most successful and lucrative video game-based media franchise in the world, behind only Super Mario Bros. series.

With that in mind, it should come to no surprise the massive amounts of Poké-ink etched into the skins of die-hard fans. I found a ton of Pokémon tattoos this week and narrowed them down to my favorites (yes I have a lot of favorites). I found a great Pokémon sleeve I wanted to include but EleventhDimension on Deviant Art specifically wrote that she didn’t want her images taken or used so I have to respect that. However, here are links so you can still check it out (here here here and here) and I keep my good conscience.

I include all the information about the tattoo that was available. If you are interested in having me feature your geeky tattoo on a future Tattoo Tuesday feel free to email me at girlgonegeekblog[at]gmail.com.

Tattoo Tuesday- Firefly

Firefly is one the best science fiction creations ever made. The insanely talented Joss Whedon (Buffy, Angel and the upcoming The Avengers) is the man behind the brilliant space western. Because I was living in Germany at the time it debuted on television (I’m military brat) I only recently started watching Firefly, and of course instantly became obsessed for all the right reasons.

It was a show that stole everyone’s heart, and that Firefly fire still burns brightly in all of the Browncoats around the world. Firefly fandom is massive, and that’s saying something since the show was prematurely canceled after only 1 season. Thankfully Whedon gave us the movie Serenity, which is nothing short of amazing. I wonder if Whedon knew the power his stellar cast, led by Captain Malcolm Reynolds and his crew of misfits, would have on people? We are leaves on the wind, watch us soar.

Enjoy these shiny tattoos while singing ‘The Ballad of Serenity’ by Greg Edmonson.
