Tattoo Tuesday: Brian K. Vaughan’s Saga & Y the Last Man Comics

With the return of Saga last week, I thought it was the perfect time to dedicate a Tattoo Tuesday to one of my favorite comic book authors, Brian K. Vaughan!

You’re doing yourself a great disservice if you’re not reading Saga yet. But seriously, what are you waiting for?! I blogged about Saga being my favorite comic book series of 2012 and it hasn’t let me down yet. Whether you fell in love with Yorick, Mitchell, Nico or Alana, we’re all part of the BKV family!

Read more when I saw BKV at NYCC las year here and here.

I include all the information about each tattoo that was available. If you’re interested in your tattoo being featured on a past or future Tattoo Tuesday or Tattoo Tuesday Featurette, email me at jamila[@]girlgonegeekblog[.]com.

He adds, “I got this tattoo after I finished my graduate degree. It is my first and only tattoo. The reasons I picked this image are twofold: First of all, I really like the series and hated to see it go. Secondly, the open straitjacket represented freedom from expectations and freedom to do what I wanted to do with my life. Sappy, I know, but I’m a bit sentimental that way.” [Source]

Tattoo Tuesday: LunaRae’s Sailor Moon & Lion King Ink

Girl Gone Geek Blog Tattoo Tuesday LunaRae tattoos Lion King Yoshi Fullmetal Alchemist Sailor Moon

LunaRae is back with new tats! You may remember her from her Yoshi and Fullmetal Alchemist Tattoo Tuesday Featurette a while back. We’ll she mentioned in that interview getting new ink and now she’s here to show it off!

If you’re interested in being featured in a Tattoo Tuesday or Tattoo Tuesday Featurette please email me at girlgonegeekblog(@)gmail(dot)com.

Tattoo Tuesday Featurette Interview with LunaRae:

What are your new tattoos of and why did you get them?

Girl Gone Geek Blog Tattoo Tuesday LunaRae tattoos Sailor MoonLunaRae: Sailor Mars tattoo – this is the symbol seen in Sailor Moon Super S and Sailor Moon Stars. It took me a while to decide but I liked the idea of keeping my ankle tattoos as symbols. Sailor Mars is my favorite Sailor Senshi. I’m also an Aries, and my name is Rae. Perfect huh? After not being able to see my best friend/sister in over a year (because she had to move away for a while), we are finally reunited and I have my matching [Simba tattoos] this time!

I’m loving your geeky collection of tattoos! Any plans for new ones?
LunaRae:  Future tattoo plans?: I’m debating on The Hunger Games Mockingjay pin for the outside of my left leg. The book series is by far one of my favorites, and the movie was really good as well. The other idea is to do my favorite APC (A Perfect Circle) album design (“Mer De Noms” album). There are always ideas going through my head about adding to my Yoshi tattoos on my back, but I’m still up in the air about it.
Where do you live on the internet?

I’m on Facebook of course, though I keep that personal. I do have a photography page there “LunaRaePhotography“. I am also on Deviantart, LunaRaeB.

Tattoo Tuesday Featurette- Matt’s ‘Lord of the Rings’ Smaug Tattoo

photo (1)

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

My name is Matt Naragon, and I have been geeky as long as I can remember. I am an avid game player, a Mac enthusiast, a dnd lover, and a husband of an equally geeky wife.

What is your geeky tattoo of and why did you get it?

The tattoo is of hobbit origin, and shows us part of the famous map and an image of Smaug lurking around the side. I have always loved Tolkien, and the tattoo just naturally suits me. The tattoo was created by artist Brooks Blanton from Wildman’s Tattoo in Ft Wayne, IN. He did a fantastic job bringing this tattoo to life, and remains one of the most amazing portrait tattooists I have ever seen.

Any plans for future tattoos?

Future plans for the tattoo are to bring Gollum into the mix on the other side of the map, along with slowly migrating down to the stomach with more tasteful Tolkien art.

Are you a fan of anything else in the fantasy genre? If so, what?

I am a big fan of gaming, especially Assassins Creed as of late. I also love Star Wars and things associated with it. Oh, and zombies.

If you were going on an adventure, which 5 Tolkien characters would you take with you?

I would definitely take Boromir as my first pick. Elrond would be useful, and young Bilbo would come as well. It would be a toss up between Fili or Kili for fourth spot, and I could have no other than Gandalf taking up the rear (to always save the day).

If you were on a deserted island what video game, comic/book, movie, TV show would you bring?

I would bring along Skyrim for gaming, as it would last me the longest. The Hobbit would be book of choice, and probably movie of choice as well. The TV show would be Rules of Engagement, I’ve been watching that sitcom lately on Netflix and love it.

Where can we find you on the internet?

I am not on the Internet in force much, but you can usually find me on Facebook or Deviant Art. If not there, lately I have been going crazy planning out the perfect Connor AC3 cosplay outfit.

Tattoo Tuesday Featurette: Andy’s Studio Ghibli & Akira Back Piece

Girl Gone Geek Blog Andy's Akira Tattoo3

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Girl Gone Geek Blog Andy Tattoo TuesdayAndy: I’m 32, and living in Wales, UK where I work as a security guard and bouncer, whilst completing a film degree in my spare time. Still make time for my comics and Akira collection – my passion!

What are your tattoos and why did you get them?

Andy: My ‘main’ ink is a large Akira back piece (Notice a theme forming? lol) comprised of the 5th cover of the paperback collection (green Tetsuo), the cover of a Japanese special edition DVD (Tetsuo/cape) and Kaneda with Bike from an ad for the laserdisc. About 45 hours or so, but may add to it. As far as I’m concerned, nothing comes close to the quality of the film and comics. Perfection. On my stomach is a black and grey Totoro homage, with Mei leapfrogging Chibi and Chu. This was my very first tat. In fact, the search for references is what led me to your wonderful blog and your Totoro Tattoo Tuesday! Colour me grateful! :-) On my hip is a work-in-progress No Face from Spirited Away. They all represent my fanatical love of the Anime I grew up with, and a manifestation of my light fluffy side contrasted with my darker preferences, I guess. If I want be pretentious about it. ;-)

We can see that! Any plans for future ink?

Andy: I’m planning a massive studio Ghibli homage for my chest/ribs – bathhouse of the gods behind my NoFace, a Hayao Miyazaki landscape and Catbus behind the Totoro piece to go to my breastbone. A rocky crevice on the opposite hip to No Face to be filled with soot gremlins, with one or two joining procession behind Chibi. A cherry blossom tree atop the rocks, with the main from Princess Mononoke by it, and cherry blossoms falling/caught by soot gremlin below.
That should keep me going for a bit!

I love how you have all the details planned out. If you could have any Ghibli creature as a pet, which would it be and why?

Totoro and No Face

Totoro and No Face

Andy: A soot gremlin (or MANY) as a pet, for sure. Would take the pain out of housework if I could just shout at the dirt and have it run itself away…

Good point, plus, they’re pretty cute. If you were on a deserted island what video game, comic/book, movie, TV show would you bring?

Andy:

Videogame – Skyrim

Comic- What else? AKIRA!!!

Movie – Akira AGAIN. But Spirited Away is a close second.

TV- Babylon 5, it was so clever for its time, and the narrative is EPIC. The Walking Dead, too, please. I’m greedy!

Where can we find you on the internet?

Andy: I’m almost off the grid:-( I don’t have my own blog yet, waiting until I restart my ink. If you wish, hit me up on email or Facebook at Andy-price@live.co.uk

Tattoo Tuesday Featurette: Amy’s Space Tattoo

Rocket Ship
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
HeadshotI am 38 and have just come out as a sci-fi geek these last few years. It has been so much fun to go to conventions, talk about my favorite shows and books endlessly, and even create a sci-fi book club. In the daytime, I’m opening a seasonal restaurant on a lake with my husband so I can have winters off.
What is your tattoo of and why did you get it?
My tattoo is a rocket ship in space done in the style of 1950’s sci-fi book art. I really like the stylization and color schemes that were used back then.  The main reason I got it was as an homage to sci-fi. Getting it done was part of embracing the fact that I love sci-fi and read it voraciously. I’ve always read it and always will. Science fiction is a part of how I see the world. I believe it’s made me a smarter person and I wanted to immortalize that in a tattoo.
Where did you get your geeky tattoos done and by who?
Ryan (Opie) Mueller at Leviticus http://leviticus.com/
Any plans for future tattoos?
Yes! Currently I’m thinking to continue down the arm. Since the rocket ship is in space I might put land below it and then the underworld below that. I have a sneaking suspicion that a blue police box may show up in one of those designs. I also have my back done. It’s a tree in tribal design. I toy with adding to that as well but I get more excited thinking about what to put in the underworld.
What are you a fangirl for?
Dr. Who! The writing is great, the companion relationships are fascinating, the unlimited worlds are intriguing, it’s just awesome! I also really like when time travel is wrapped up into stories. It allows for many mind-bending stories.
If you had to live in any fictional sci-fi world, what would it be and why?
I would want to be a member of SG1. I would be able to travel to different worlds, accidentally travel in time (or parallel realities) when the wormhole messes up, save people on other planets, and, of course, hang out with McGyver! I really liked Stargate Universe too but I wouldn’t want to be trapped on that ship. Stargate Atlantis was my least favorite (still watched). The Wraith were really good bad guys though!
If you were on a deserted island what video game, comic/book, movie, TV show would you bring? I would bring my Buffy comics, all the Dr. Who episodes, and the Fifth Element. That movie never gets old.

Tattoo Tuesday Featurette- Shane’s Comic Book Ink

So there I was, at New York Comic Con sitting in the front row of the Grant Morrison panel waiting for it to start and buzzing with excitement, when I glance to the man to my right and saw Grant’s face on his arm! I freaked out (in a good way) and switched seats with my friend to ask him all about his amazing Grant Morrison tattoo. After we bonded over Grant for a bit he showed me even more comic book tattoos that he had. Jackpot!

Tattoo Tuesday is one of my favorite things to blog about. I love tattoos and geek things and love it even more when they combine. As I’ve said many times, Grant Morrison’s The Invisibles is what got me into reading comics. He blew my mind and changed the way I thought about a lot of things. So when I saw Shane’s tattoo, I knew Grant must have affected his life in an amazing way and wanted to hear all about it. By the way, Shane’s middle name is Bruce Wayne. Yeah, pretty awesome.

Tattoo Tuesday Featurette Interview with Shane:

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I’m 23 years old, from Westchester, NY. I’ve been reading and collecting comics since the age of 5 (no joke I bagged and boarded my comics and organized them alphabetically at that age) I love the geek/comic culture and have always dreamed of working in the industry.

What are your tattoos of, and why did you get them?

I started getting tattooed at the age of 15, mostly traditional old school work, mainly because as far back as I could remember I’ve always seen myself with tattoos. So it’s more about evening out my outer appearance with my inner. Recently I’ve only been getting comic related tattoos and its all I really plan on getting from here on out (besides a descendants one I got last month) because it really describes who I am and what I’m about.

I’ve been tattooed by multiple artists over the years, now I strictly stick with my dudes, Vicente Guizar at House of Ink in Mt Vernon and Dan Mountain from Ink Studio also in Mt Vernob

Any plans for future tattoos?

Absolutely I’m currently working on a Batman half sleeve which I’ve been planning since as far back as I can remember. And many more to come after that.

I met you at a Grant Morrison panel and judging by your tattoo of him, he’s made a big impact in your life. Can you explain how Morrison’s work has affected your life?

I feel that Grant is the most influential and controversial writer of our time. His work really saved my life. I first started reading his work on Animal Man but discovered who he actually was when he was doing The Invisibles, then became a die hard fan around the time he started his epic run on Batman. His work has been influential to me and something I really hold dear. As a person he’s very positive and spiritual which I really admire. I believe people these days need to focus on the solution and not the problems, and to practice love in all our affairs.

Which authors and comics have been most influential in your life and why?

Besides Grant, I grew up loving Mike Allred’s Madman, Jim Lee’s WildC.A.T.S and most of all Chuck Dixon, Frank Miller, Jim Starlin and all the other Batman writers of the 90s, that’s what really got me into comics and shaped my favorite character for me growing up. I really enjoy obscure characters and have a total dude crush on Namor the Submariner. Geoff Johns run on JSA to my favorite books ever. And I’ve really been enjoying EVERYTHING Scott Snyder has been doing. Aside from comics, Deepak Chopra, Kahlil Gibran, Emmet Fox, today in life I try to practice being positive and living my life in the light. Notice I said try… nobody’s perfect.

If you were on a deserted island what video game, comic/book, movie, TV show would you bring?

I don’t really play video games. But I’d go with The Avengers arcade, The Picture of Dorian Gray, Captain Ron (for comedic relief) and Batman TAS.

Where can we find you on the Internet?

On the roof with commissioner Gordon. Or on Instagram: bigblued
