Tattoo Tuesday Featurette: Andy’s Studio Ghibli & Akira Back Piece

Girl Gone Geek Blog Andy's Akira Tattoo3

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Girl Gone Geek Blog Andy Tattoo TuesdayAndy: I’m 32, and living in Wales, UK where I work as a security guard and bouncer, whilst completing a film degree in my spare time. Still make time for my comics and Akira collection – my passion!

What are your tattoos and why did you get them?

Andy: My ‘main’ ink is a large Akira back piece (Notice a theme forming? lol) comprised of the 5th cover of the paperback collection (green Tetsuo), the cover of a Japanese special edition DVD (Tetsuo/cape) and Kaneda with Bike from an ad for the laserdisc. About 45 hours or so, but may add to it. As far as I’m concerned, nothing comes close to the quality of the film and comics. Perfection. On my stomach is a black and grey Totoro homage, with Mei leapfrogging Chibi and Chu. This was my very first tat. In fact, the search for references is what led me to your wonderful blog and your Totoro Tattoo Tuesday! Colour me grateful! :-) On my hip is a work-in-progress No Face from Spirited Away. They all represent my fanatical love of the Anime I grew up with, and a manifestation of my light fluffy side contrasted with my darker preferences, I guess. If I want be pretentious about it. ;-)

We can see that! Any plans for future ink?

Andy: I’m planning a massive studio Ghibli homage for my chest/ribs – bathhouse of the gods behind my NoFace, a Hayao Miyazaki landscape and Catbus behind the Totoro piece to go to my breastbone. A rocky crevice on the opposite hip to No Face to be filled with soot gremlins, with one or two joining procession behind Chibi. A cherry blossom tree atop the rocks, with the main from Princess Mononoke by it, and cherry blossoms falling/caught by soot gremlin below.
That should keep me going for a bit!

I love how you have all the details planned out. If you could have any Ghibli creature as a pet, which would it be and why?

Totoro and No Face

Totoro and No Face

Andy: A soot gremlin (or MANY) as a pet, for sure. Would take the pain out of housework if I could just shout at the dirt and have it run itself away…

Good point, plus, they’re pretty cute. If you were on a deserted island what video game, comic/book, movie, TV show would you bring?

Andy:

Videogame – Skyrim

Comic- What else? AKIRA!!!

Movie – Akira AGAIN. But Spirited Away is a close second.

TV- Babylon 5, it was so clever for its time, and the narrative is EPIC. The Walking Dead, too, please. I’m greedy!

Where can we find you on the internet?

Andy: I’m almost off the grid:-( I don’t have my own blog yet, waiting until I restart my ink. If you wish, hit me up on email or Facebook at Andy-price@live.co.uk

Tattoo Tuesday Featurette- Alexia’s Studio Ghibli Tattoo

Alexia’s tattoo was done by Tom Pickett at Bespoke Tattoos in Guildford, Surrey

As you can tell by now, I’m a big fan of tattoos. But there’s something about Miyazaki related tattoos that I love more than others. I even wrote a Thank You Letter to Miyazki, explaining my love for the animation genius.

So when Alexia emailed me her darling tattoo inspired by the Studio Ghibli Great Collection, I instantly fell in love. My next tattoo will be a quote from Sandman, but recently I’ve been considering a Ghibli/Miyazaki related tattoo. Of course, if that happens I’ll blog all about it!

If you’re interested in being featured in a Tattoo Tuesday or Tattoo Tuesday Featurette please email me at jamila@girlgonegeekblog(dot)com.

Tattoo Tuesday Featurette Interview with Alexia

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

My names Alexia Christofi, I’m a 21-year-old girl from London, but I’m at university in Portsmouth studying computer games technology.

What is your tattoo of and why did you get it?

My tattoos a Studio Ghibli inspired piece, it’s the front cover of the Studio Ghibli Great Collection. I’m a massive Miyazaki fan and have been since I was younger, I can watch the films over and over and still be impressed every time. I figure if I was going to have something permanent on my skin it may as well be something beautiful that I’m passionate about!

Do you have any other tattoos?

I have a small heart on my wrist. Pretty cliché but a best friend and I decided to get matching tattoos, and it’s simple and small enough to not be overbearing.

Any plans for future tattoos?

I have at least 2 more planned, one is my daughter’s name in Greek on my wrist, but my biggest one is a Howls Moving Castle sleeve. I need to first find someone who’s brilliant enough to do it though, it’s pretty intricate!

Favorite Miyazaki movie?

Favourite would probably have to be Howls Moving Castle. My best friend and I probably watch it at least twice a month!

Which character from a Miyazaki movie would you love to have as a pet?

I’d love to have a totoro as a pet, I’m not sure why but they’ve just always appealed to me!

What are your other favorite fandoms?

I’m not sure I really have any other favourites, I suppose I read a lot of books and play a lot of games but I rarely find myself focusing a lot of my energy on one thing!

Where can we find you in the web?

I have a twitter and a tumblr, but I be honest they’re both just full of pictures from my instagram and random reboots and retweets, but feel free to follow if you want to anyway! :D

Thank You, Hayao Miyazaki

“I’ve come to the point where I just can’t make a movie without addressing the problem of humanity as part of an ecosystem.”

– Hayao Miyazaki

Dear Hayao Miyazaki,

It all started one afternoon in my uncle’s room on a hot and humid summer day in The Bronx in 1999. My uncle popped Princess Mononoke (Mononoke Hime) in the VCR and my brother, cousin and I sat in awe for 134 minutes. Then I watched it again. And again. And again. I fell in love with Princess Mononoke that day, and concurrently with everything that you breathed life into.

Mononoke was different yet so familiar, like a story I knew I always needed to hear. There was violence, industrialization and humans juxtaposed against nature, spirits and gods. But it was all beautiful.  I didn’t know who was bad and who was good. It was strange not knowing who to root for, especially at 12 years old. But then I realized that was the point. It’s rare in family films that the line isn’t distinct between the hero and the villain. Life isn’t black and white, and through your films you showed us and prepared children for the realities of the world.

After Mononoke, I devoured any and everything you made that I could get my hands on, from Porco Rosso, Spirited Away,  Laputa: Castle in the Sky and much more. Totoro, Kiki and Nausicaä represent a lot of your recurring themes such as reverence for nature, highlighting independence and encouraging pacifism but depicted in such magical ways. Disney had female characters, some strong, some not. But you are constantly representing strong female characters in your work. They were not always likable, but always real, and I respect and admire you for that. That is what young girls and boys need to see.

You are one of the worlds greatest directors of animation and writers to grace this planet. Your films tickle my soul and you make the world a better place.

Thank you, Hayao Miyazaki.

The Best Collection of Ponyo Cosplay

Well… I supposed the “best”  part is subjective, so subjectively it’s the best Ponyo cosplay I’ve found for my lovely readers. Hayao Miyazaki is one of my favorite directors/animators and I love to praise him and his work any chance I get. Aside from the Totoro Tattoo Tuesday and Miyazaki Tattoo Tuesday I plan on doing a series of Miyazaki Cosplay posts. Ponyo, along with Miyazaki’s other films, always tickles my heart and gives me the warm fuzzies. I love his themes of feminism, pacifism and nature. If you haven’t seen any Miyazaki or Studio Ghibli films they are an absolute must!

This post, as you’ve noticed, is dedicated to the adorable Ponyo (Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea). I’ve scoured the net for the best cosplay and I hope you enjoy it!

Tattoo Tuesday- Hayao Miyazaki Films

This past Sunday was my 200th post here on Girl Gone Geek Blog and I decided to celebrate by having a giveaway.  I will be giving away a Kodama decal, all you have to do is go here and tell me what your favorite Miyazaki film is and why, that’s it!  I will be chosing the winner Sunday, November 14th.  Tell your friends!

Staying in the Miyazaki moment, (because honestly how could you not the man is a genius!) this weeks Tattoo Tuesday theme is Miyazaki movies!  A majority of the tattoos I found were Princess Mononoke, which is my favorite.  If you are wondering where Totoro is don’t fret!  I previously did a Totoro Tattoo Tuesday which you can see here.

I <3 Hayao Miyazaki.  Watching his anime films tickle my soul.

If you are interested in having me feature your geeky tattoo on a future Tattoo Tuesday feel free to email me at girlgonegeekblog[at]gmail.com.
