Playstation Vita Handheld

Playstation announced their new touchscreen 3D handheld “Playstation Vita”, once called Sony NGP or “Next Generation Portable” when its existence leaked a while back. PS Vita’s only internet provider will be AT&T and the name of the device’s connection suite will be called “Near”.

“Vita means “Life” in Latin, and was chosen, according to Sony, because they feel the device “enables a revolutionary combination of rich gaming and social connectivity within a real world context. SCE is aiming to transform every aspect of user’s daily life into an entertainment experience.

AT&T’s mobile broadband network excels at delivering data with high speeds nationwide, which is what we need for powering the social and connectivity features built into the PlayStation Vita portable entertainment system,” said Jack Tretton, president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America. “PlayStation Vita will give users the opportunity to engage and connect with one another while delivering the kind of rich and immersive gaming experiences unimaginable on any other portable device on the market today.”

PS Vita will cost $249 for the WiFi model (price of the Nintendo 3DS) and $299 for the model with both WiFi and 3G. The price in Europe will be €249 and €299, respectively. The handheld will be available during the 2011 holiday season everywhere and has 80 titles in development.

“More interesting is the announcement of the Party system. It allows players to voice chat via headset or built-in microphone in party rooms across any game, similar to Xbox Live’s party system. They also reaffirmed the Near system, which is also similar to Xbox Live’s friend features. [Destructoid]” Continue reading →
