Tattoo Tuesday Featurette- Alexia’s Studio Ghibli Tattoo

Alexia’s tattoo was done by Tom Pickett at Bespoke Tattoos in Guildford, Surrey

As you can tell by now, I’m a big fan of tattoos. But there’s something about Miyazaki related tattoos that I love more than others. I even wrote a Thank You Letter to Miyazki, explaining my love for the animation genius.

So when Alexia emailed me her darling tattoo inspired by the Studio Ghibli Great Collection, I instantly fell in love. My next tattoo will be a quote from Sandman, but recently I’ve been considering a Ghibli/Miyazaki related tattoo. Of course, if that happens I’ll blog all about it!

If you’re interested in being featured in a Tattoo Tuesday or Tattoo Tuesday Featurette please email me at jamila@girlgonegeekblog(dot)com.

Tattoo Tuesday Featurette Interview with Alexia

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

My names Alexia Christofi, I’m a 21-year-old girl from London, but I’m at university in Portsmouth studying computer games technology.

What is your tattoo of and why did you get it?

My tattoos a Studio Ghibli inspired piece, it’s the front cover of the Studio Ghibli Great Collection. I’m a massive Miyazaki fan and have been since I was younger, I can watch the films over and over and still be impressed every time. I figure if I was going to have something permanent on my skin it may as well be something beautiful that I’m passionate about!

Do you have any other tattoos?

I have a small heart on my wrist. Pretty cliché but a best friend and I decided to get matching tattoos, and it’s simple and small enough to not be overbearing.

Any plans for future tattoos?

I have at least 2 more planned, one is my daughter’s name in Greek on my wrist, but my biggest one is a Howls Moving Castle sleeve. I need to first find someone who’s brilliant enough to do it though, it’s pretty intricate!

Favorite Miyazaki movie?

Favourite would probably have to be Howls Moving Castle. My best friend and I probably watch it at least twice a month!

Which character from a Miyazaki movie would you love to have as a pet?

I’d love to have a totoro as a pet, I’m not sure why but they’ve just always appealed to me!

What are your other favorite fandoms?

I’m not sure I really have any other favourites, I suppose I read a lot of books and play a lot of games but I rarely find myself focusing a lot of my energy on one thing!

Where can we find you in the web?

I have a twitter and a tumblr, but I be honest they’re both just full of pictures from my instagram and random reboots and retweets, but feel free to follow if you want to anyway! :D

Tattoo Tuesday- Samurai Champloo

I’m extremely picky with my anime, but Samurai Champloo is damn near perfect in my eyes. But what else would you expect from the great Shinichirō Watanabe? The animation is sharper than Mugan’s mouth and the soundtrack is smoother than Jin’s swordplay. I was head-over-heels in love with Mugen and Jin. How could you not adore bad boy Mugen and his b-boy fighting skills?! Or admire the reserved and mysterious Jin? And can someone please tell me how Fuu manages to eat all that food! I’m sure Momo is hiding somewhere in the folds of blog post. Champloo was beautiful, hilarious and touching at the same time. Simply put, it was a damn good anime.

You can’t talk about Samurai Champloo without including the opening credits.

I include all the information about the tattoo that was available. If you’re interested in your tattoo being featured on a past or future Tattoo Tuesday or Tattoo Tuesday Featurette, email me at jamila[@]girlgonegeekblog[.]com.

Anime Burlesque

Calling All Otakus!

From the same people who brought you the Sci-fi, Video Game and Star Wars Burlesque Shows, now comes Anime Burlesque. These burlesque dancers take on (just to take it off) some of your favorite female anime characters.

“Devil’s Playground returned to Bordello on January 8 for Anime Babes, a burlesque show dedicated to Japanese animation favorites. Characters from Pokemon, Tokyo Mew Mew, Fullmetal Alchemist, Sailor Moon, Speed Racer and Neon Genesis Evangelion made an appearance throughout the night. (LA Weekly)”

But wait, they don’t have Faye (Cowboy Bebop)?! Come on! They wouldn’t even have to sex-up her outfit either since her gravity defying short shorts which barely supported by suspenders, cropped shirt are revealing enough to start with. Well here’s hoping they have a part two, since they have done that with previous shows.  Who would you want to see burlesqued up if they have a part two?

I’m happy that Devil’s Playground does these Geeky Burlesque shows but to be honest I feel like I’ve seen better cosplay at cons #imjustsayin.

Read a review of the show here from Liz’s article: “Anime Babes from Sailor Moon to Rei Ayanami: This Isn’t Cosplay, This is Burlesque”

Sunday Funnies- Death Note

With all this Death-Note-live-action-American-remake-Zac-Effon stuff going around it’s only right to have todays Sunday Funny Death Note comic. I originally saw it on my friends Tumblr Mist of the North Star. The comic is made by Giovanny Hernandez on Snafu Comics.

Also my friend over at Otkaus & Geeks got me this super adorable L doll for Christmas. I welcomed him home with a cupcake! You know L loves his sweets!

Tattoo Tuesday- Ghost in the Shell

Strangely and surprisingly enough I’ve returned from my Tattoo Tuesday hiatus during finals week. I suppose it’s about time to come up for air before I’m pulled back under again for a few more days.

This week is dedicated to one of my favorite anime films of all time, Masamune Shirow’s Ghost in the Shell. I even wrote a 20 page paper on it for class last semester, I was allowed to pick my topic *evil grin*. I created a condensed blog post version Cyborgs Exist and Humanity is Doomed. It’s about how we are currently living in a posthuman society (yes right now) and how cyborgs exist. I use GITS as an oracle for what we can expect in the future and debate whether a ghost (i.e. soul) can exist in a shell (i.e. machine). GITS goes much further than the typical self-aware machine, and pushes the limits and achieves a type of techno-transcendence (isn’t that a brilliant word?!).

If I don’t stop myself now I’ll start an entirely new 20 page paper! And you didn’t come here for that, you came here to see tattoos and tattoos you shall see!

Enjoy Cyberpunkers!

I included all the information about the tattoo that was available. If you are interested in having me feature your geeky tattoo on a future Tattoo Tuesday feel free to email me at girlgonegeekblog[at]gmail.com.

Kodama Decal Giveaway and 200th Post on Girl Gone Geek Blog!

This is the 200th post on Girl Gone Geek Blog!

If you are wondering why I’m “celebrating” post 200 and not post 100 it’s because I blogged right on by post 100 without noticing, typical me!  I started Girl Gone Geek Blog (GGGB) May 27th of this year.  What began as a hobby to share my little obsessions with the citizens of The Interwebs has turned into so much more than I had imagined!

While searching for awesome geekery to blog about I discovered so many amazing blogs, websites which you should also check out, most of my favorites are on my Blog Roll on the left of the site.  Despite how cliché it sounds, the best part of GGGB was getting the chance to “meet” all of you who read my blog on a regular and send me such positive responses on here. And how could I forget all of my wonderful geeky/gamer/otakus/fangirl/fanboy twitter friends!

Here’s a few of my favorite posts thus far (it may seem like a lot but it’s out of 200!):

New York Comic Con and Anime Festival 2010

Also follow them on twitter for the latest tweets @NY_Anime_Fest @NY_Comic_Con!

Gotta Catch the Pikachu School Bus!

This is probably the coolest school bus in the entire world, or at least Japan.  I’m a little jealous (very jealous actually) of the kindergarteners in Osaka, Japan who get to ride this Pikachu School Bus.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World Movie Review

I first want to give a shout out to GFBrobot for suggesting I do a review for their website for Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. Check out their site and the article here also. I previously did a post on their site Cyborgs Exist and Humanity is Doomed (also on GurlGoneGeek here).

If you are a fan of the six-volume comic series Scott Pilgrim vs. The World by Bryan Lee O’Malley there is no need to worry because the movie stays true to the source martial.  I (un)shamefully admit I was one of the many Scott Pilgrim bandwagoners and quickly read the series just in time to see the movie opening day.  I liked the series it was funny and loved all of the novelty and geekery in it.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World starred everyone’s favorite awkward nerd superstar Michael Cera as well as Anna Kendrick (Up in the Air), Mae Whitman (Arrested Development), Allison Pill (Milk), Chris Evans (Fantastic Four and soon to be Captain America) to name a few.  It was directed by Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead) which opened Aug. 13th.

Scott Pilgrim is one of the oldest stories in the book, just a bit more literal: Boy meets the girl of his dreams and has to fight to keep her.  Seriously though, she literally roller blades through his dreams… You kind of had to be there.  The setting takes place in the magical far away land of Canada.  Scott is a major slacker, jobless, bassist for his band “Sex Bob-Omb”, and lives with his gay scene-stealing roommate Wallace (Kieran Culkin) whom he shares a bed with.  But he isn’t Wallace’s gay lover, Scott’s just broke and lazy, and they can’t afford another bed.

The movie begins with Scott dating a 17-year-old High School girl named Knives Chau (played by Ellen Wong)… by the way he’s 23.  But then Ramona (Mary Elizabeth Windstead) takes a shortcut using the subspace-portal through his dreams and he can’t get her off his mind after that.  Scott takes Ramona out on a date, which is really just a walk around a park.  Did I mention he’s broke and lazy?  After that things start moving ridiculously fast with Ramona and next thing Scott knows he’s dating two girls at once.  Scott drops Knives for Ramona but Knives doesn’t drop Scott.

After he defeats Ramona’s Indian pseudo-pirate ex-boyfriend in a Bollywood musical melee, he discovers that he has to defeat her seven evil ex-boyfriends (one is an ex-girlfriend during her “bi-curious sexy phase”) into order to continue dating her.  As you can see by now, story is profoundly unrealistic but the movie is fully aware of this and doesn’t take itself too seriously which makes it even funnier.

The video game style fight scenes with the evil exes are fun and are sure to make any gamer laugh or atleast smile a bit.  Instead of a bloody beaten body lying on the ground after the fight the exes turn into coins, items, power ups and extra lives.  Smiling yet?  Don’t worry you will. Scott has his fair share of exes too, which is kind of hard to believe since he’s such a slacker and a jerk at times to girls but we have to remember this story profoundly unrealistic.

The rating:  Go see it! Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is a big pop culture cocktail but even if you aren’t a nerd, otaku, fanboy/fangirl, gamer or hipster the movie is still just as humorous and fun.
