Girl Gone Geek Interview with Sarah creator of My Geeky Boyfriend:
Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
Sarah: I grew up in Chicago, and now live in Los Angeles. I love creating (always have), and will work with any medium. My idea of a relaxing weekend is to sew all day, then play video games all night. I also like to travel as much as I possibly can, go to hockey games (go Hawks!), see movies, and explore every part of Los Angeles. I majored in fashion design, so I also enjoy designing and making clothing. However, I’ve found that my love of all things geek combined with crafting is where I want to be! I want to spread geekery all over the world.
How long have you been crafting?
S: I have been crafting ever since I can remember. Just before I started Kindergarten, my family moved into a house that had a bar in the basement. My mom decided to turn it into my ‘arts center,’ which was more than amazingly cool. There was a sink to wash my paint brushes, and she covered the mirror with cork board so I could pin-up all my work. I got a sewing machine when I was about 10, and have been sewing ever since! I have a list at least a mile long of all the things I want to make, which will keep me crafting for quite a while.
What is My Geeky Boyfriend Shop origin story?
S: Not long after we started dating, my boyfriend, Matt asked if I could make him some pillow cases. I asked what kind he wanted, to which he replied “I want ninjas on them”. Yes, my 28-year-old boyfriend asked for ninja pillowcases. So I went to the interwebs for inspiration. I ending up finding really great fabric that came in both red and black with Japanese characters; some of which looked like ninjas with swords. When I presented the finished product to him, he was speechless; he thought it was the coolest thing ever. Anytime any of his friends came over, he always showed them off. In addition to the pillowcases, I then made several other things for him: a matching ninja laundry bag (mostly because I was sick of stepping on clothes all the time) and oven mitts with Darth Vader on them (he was using a washcloth to get things out of the oven…).
His friends started noticing and commenting on all of this awesome stuff that kept popping up at his place, and Matt would always reply, “Sarah made it!” One of his friends suggested that I sell online (which had honestly not even crossed my mind!) so I took that advice and ran with it. I still make special things for Matt, and he inspires me to come up with new ideas for my shop. I’m also in talks with a few companies to obtain licensing rights to these video game/movie/comic book characters, so I can sell to the masses! One of my ultimate goals is to sell on ThinkGeek.com. So watch out for that : )
Which have been some of your favorite items to make?
S: My favorite items to make are probably the iPad/gadget cases. I love taking an image (the Batman symbol, Ghostbusters logo, Star Trek uniforms) and recreating and reinterpreting them into a fabric design. I am very proud of the fact that everything I make is hand sewn – nothing is screen printed, glued, ironed, or painted on. My other favorite item (which is not currently available in my shop) are pajama pants that I made for Matt for Christmas this past year. I custom designed a fabric pattern with images from the Megaman videogame (yup, I’m old school), had a small amount of yardage manufactured, and made it into pajama pants. Matt wears them all time, and even shows them off to his friends. I am hoping to be able to have those available online later this year, along with other patterns.
Do you have any geeky obsessions? If so what?
S: Aside from videogames (I’m all about old school Nintendo, and currently addicted to Minecraft) I LOVE Legos; especially the new architecture series and the collector’s minifig series. I have so many minifigs, that they’ve pretty much taken over the living room. Whenever we host game night, everyone gets to pick their own minifig as a game piece, no matter what we’re playing.
If Kirby were to swallow you, what power would he get?
S: I love this question, but could only come up with a semi-interesting answer: he’d probably gain the power to sew super incredibly fast. He might also turn purple (my favorite color) buy some killer platform shoes and stomp on all his enemies.
The platform shoes and stomping power reminds me of Bayonetta :)… So if you were on a deserted island what video game, comic/book, movie, TV show would you bring?
S: … Video Game: probably Minecraft. I’m obsessed with it right now. Plus, what if the island has creepers? A girl’s gotta be prepared.
Movie: Back to the Future. I will never get tired of that movie. Or Anchorman… or The Big Lebowski. : )
TV show: The Office. Hands down. Even though I’ve seen every episode at least 50 times, I still laugh at everything.
Book: this is tough, because I have soooo many favorites. My number one favorite book of all time is I Know This Much Is True by Wally Lamb. It’s about 900 pages, but one of the most unique stories I’ve ever read. I highly recommend it!
Where can we find you on the web?
I also love to take custom orders, so if you have an idea for something that you can’t find anywhere else, I’d love to make it for you!!
