My ‘Steven Universe’ Gemsona: Black Pearl

CARTOONNETWORK-StevenUniverse

I rarely call any show perfect but Steven Universe is perfect. The only other show I’ve said that about is Avatar: The Last Airbender (I still have one season left to watch I was a late bloomer, cut me some slack).

Never heard of Steven Universe? Well it’s about the adventures of The Crystal Gems (Steven, Garnet, Amethyst and Pearl) and the people of Beach City. Garnet, Amethyst and Pearl are intergalactic warriors who get their powers from magical gemstones. Steven is a half-Gem and half-human boy from Earth who inherited his mom’s gemstone, Rose Quartz (who was also a Crystal Gem). Steven is still figuring out how to use his gem and spends his time going on adventures with the Crystal Gems and hanging out in his hometown, Beach City.

Connie, Steven and Lion

The series is created by Rebecca Sugar who was the storyboard artist, writer and composer for Adventure Time. It’s the first Cartoon Network show by the studio to be created by a woman. Go Rebecca! Steven Universe isn’t just cute and funny but also smart, deep and incredibly heartwarming. The feels are very strong in this show.

Because I wasn’t caught up with the show for a while I avoided all internet things related to SU. So I didn’t know about gemsonas until I saw the one my brother Myles made, Hambergite. A Gemsona is a Gem persona that a fan creates, usually with fan art. They are original fan made Gem characters. You can have one or many gemsonas. Of course, I wanted a gemsona too! I’m not an artist, but my brother is and he said he would make me one. Perks of being his sister! I described to him my gemsona’s personality, body type, outfit, gem location and weapon and I was blown away at how beautiful she came out. I love that he made her in the Steven Universe art style, too. Check out more of his art on tumblr: skoots-does-a-sketch.tumblr.com. If you want to see more gemsonas, check out the tag on tumblr.

I introduce to you my gemsona, Black Pearl!

My Gemsona Black Pearl [Art by Myles]

My Gemsona Black Pearl [Art by Myles]

Gem: Black Pearl

Weapon: Trident

Personality: She’s a carefree Gem who loves to swim, surf, sing and dance.

Backstory: Black Pearl is from Homeworld but never really felt at home there. Thousands of years ago she came to Earth for typical Gem business but her ship malfunctioned and she ended up on an island in the South Pacific. She finally felt like she was home and has stayed there ever since.

Myles’ Gemsona Hambergite

Gem: Hambergite
Weapon: Giant Rocket Launcher
Personality: Kind of mean and rude but has a soft side that he tries to keep secret.
Backstory: Hambergite is a Homeworld Gem that sort of bought into the goals of galactic conquest from the Gem leaders. Hambergite feels a bit uneasy about all the stuff Gems do to the planets they invade, but he’s just a goon and ultimately wants to keep his superiors happy.

50 Pieces of Beautifully Strange “Welcome to Night Vale” Fan Art

I first discovered Welcome to Night Vale during one of my many endless scroll sessions on Tumblr. I kept seeing Night Vale fan art, so I downloaded the podcast and well, my life hasn’t been the same since.

If you don’t know…

“WELCOME TO NIGHT VALE is a twice-monthly podcast in the style of community updates for the small desert town of Night Vale, featuring local weather, news, announcements from the Sheriff’s Secret Police, mysterious lights in the night sky, dark hooded figures with unknowable powers, and cultural events.”

The writing is quite brilliant and very very strange. There’s a heavy H.P. Lovecraft influence except it’s light on the serious and heavy on the funny (despite the odd and terrifying events that happen in Night Vale).

The Night Vale fan community is filed with some of the most creative people I’ve encountered in any fandom. I originally just wanted to share a few pieces of fan art but somehow ended up with 50… whoops!

“It seems that all over Night Vale, books have simply ceased functioning. The scientists are studying one of the broken books to see if they can understand just what is going on here. The exact problem is currently unclear, but some of the words being used include ‘sparks,’ ‘meat smell,’ ‘biting,’ and ‘lethal gas.’ For your own safety, please do not attempt to open a book until we have more information on the nature and cause of these problems.”

Game of Thrones 80/90s Art by Mike Wrobel

If you’re like me, you always wondered what the citizens of Westeros and Essos would look like in the ’80s and ’90s. Alright, I admit, it’s never crossed my mind. But after checking out Mike Wrobel’s renditions of our most loved and hated (Joffery, I’m looking at you) characters, it’s funny how perfect they fit in that era. I wouldn’t mind seeing an episode or two of them in a totally screwed up version of Full House.

Here’s what Wrobel had to say about his series:

What “Game of Thrones” would have looked like if the action had been set in the 80/90s?

What if swords, bows, spears and armors had been replaced with some NES guns, bats and tracksuits?
This is a fun project i ve been recently starting, imagining all the characters fighting for the throne in a 90s grunge/gangsta era.

Chungkong’s Minimalist Geek Art Posters

Frame-950px-No004-My-Alien-minimal-movie-poster
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I’m living in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. At my day job I’m a creative director for an ad agency. At nights I’m designing my own stuff.
How long have you been making art?
Since I can hold a pencil. Off course it wasn’t art then, but drawing and making my thoughts visual was allways my thing.
Where do you get the inspiration for all of your art?
I never about inspiration. For me being creative is a craft, it isn’t about being inspired. Just starting and making things. It is like Yoda told Luke: “Do or do not, there is no try”. Inspiration has nothing to do with making art.
Frame950-No144-My-AKIRA-minimal-movie-posterHow would you describe your artistic style?
When I started out designing, I strongly belied that “Less is bore”. Ironically, these days the majority of my work is about minimalism. So less is more, but I could not do it without that little devil on my shoulder telling me again and again: “Less is bore”, “Less is bore”. It keeps me sharp.
Favorite artists?
These day’s: Thierry Guetta aka Mr. Brainwash. Confusing and controversial, how much artist can you handle.
Do you have plans for any upcoming series?
They come as the go. Whenever I feel the need to make some.
Which film, book, game or show would you want to live in for one month?
One month, no more, as a vacation. Middle earth. I kind of like living where I’am right now.
If you were on a deserted island what would video game, comic/book, movie, TV show would you bring?
Just some crayons and whitepaper. Nice low-tech stuff.
Where can we find you in the web?

20 Pieces of Artwork from the Dead Space Exhibit in Paris

From the Louvre to Montmartre, artistic culture has always thrived in Paris. Now I’m not well versed in Parisian gamer culture, but I think it’s a good sign when Paris holds an art exhibition spotlighting a video game. EA and Geek-Art put on the Dead Space Art Show at Dernier Bar Avant la Fin du Monde in Paris, France to promote Dead Space 3. The exhibit runs from February 7th to March 7th, so if you happen to be in the area, you should definitely check it out!

If you’re interested in buying prints you can get them on Geek-Art’s online store.

Fan Art: An Explosion Of Creativity

“Humans have a need to share information and ideas: anything we like, anything that’s important to us, we have to let people know about it.” – Jonah Block

When geeks love, we love hard, and we want to share our love for our favorite fandoms in any way possible. One of those ways is fan art.

Fan art is nothing new, but thanks to the internet we have unlimited access to beautiful renditions of our favorite obsessions. Whether it’s a mashup, realism, minimalism; just give us a search bar and we’ll find some truly amazing fan art by talented artists. Because of the fandoms and fan art popularity, we can do more than just have the artwork as our computer wallpaper; you can buy fan art on clothing and other items through sites like Teefury, Redbubble, Threadless (to name a few).

Off Book is a web series from PBS that explores leading art and the artists that make it and the fans that share it online.

The fan art community is one of the most creative and active online. Taking pop culture stories and icons as its starting point, the fan community extends those characters into new adventures, unexpected relationships, bizarre remixes, and even as the source material for beautiful art. Limited only by the imagination of the artist, the fan art world is full of surprises and brilliance.

This Off Book episode dives deeper into a world most of us are already immersed in and gives some interesting insight to the online world of fan art. It features interviews from artists like Fred Seibert from Adventure Time, Sam SprattAdam JureskoJonah Block who I’ve featured on my blog and more.

Etsy Crush of the Week & Giveaway- ‘Harshness’ Geek Art Posters

Anthropologist in the house! Aside from being an anthropologist, Nicholas also creates some fun fan art to feed our hungry geek bellies. With art honoring such fandoms such as Game of Thrones, Star Wars, and Harry Potter (to name a few), I’m crushing pretty hard on his Etsy shop. Get to know Nicholas and enter the giveaway, details below!

Girl Gone Geek Interview with Nicholas from the Harshness Etsy Shop:

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Nicholas: I am an anthropologist that has a fancy for graphic design.

What is Harshness origin story?

Nicholas:  A couple of years ago I was making a dog book with a canine-centric revision of human history just for fun.  It was purely made out of magazine collage and took me a long time to do.   A lot of people loved it so I started a tumblr and put them all on there.  I also started making them on photoshop and illustrator for the blog.  That led into selling some of them as prints on Etsy.

How would you describe your artistic style?

Nicholas: I am not quite sure how to describe it.  I don’t feel I have found a certain style that I would call me.  I like to try different stuff and would hope that shows in the different series I do.

Where do you get the inspiration for all of your designs?

Nicholas: I do a lot of movie and sci-fi related stuff.  So I would say from those I pull a lot of inspiration.

What fandoms do you want to design for next?

Nicholas: I just did some Game of Thrones posters recently.  I have been loving that series.

Favorite artists?

Nicholas: Evan Hecox and Marc Mckee.

What are some of your current obsessions?

Nicholas: I have been fishing a lot and it’s spring in Portland so trying to skateboard more while the weather permits.

If you were a mutant what would your name and power be?

Nicholas: Mark Zuckerberg and the power to control the internet.

Where can we find you in the web?

Nicholas: Etsy Society6 Facebook Tumblr and I am on Instagram under the name Harshness if anybody wants to see my daily life things.

Thanks everyone for entering the contest! A huge congratulations to Victoria, Laura and Monique! They all win a poster of their choice from talented The Modern Stylographer. Now the hard part is trying to figure out which one to pick!  Check out their responses to their favorite fandoms below.

Winners please email me at girlgonegeekblog[at]gmail[dot]com. And of course a huge thanks to Chris Petersen to sponsoring this contest with his art.

Victoria Weinell

“My favorite fandom, is actually something I didn’t see mentioned on this lovely artist’s list. Stargate has been my fandom of choice nearly my entire life. The film came out when I was two, SG1 not too many years later. I grew up on it; it’s what introduced me to science fiction and fantasy. Not only was the show exciting and fantastic, but it was fairly family friendly and a great bonding experience to have with my father. I’d love to see some Gate art from this artist. I’d be a regular customer, without a doubt.”

Laura Harbron

“My favorite fandom is anything in the Whedonverse. Firefly especially. I’ve found these fans to be extremely friendly, creative, and fun. Nothing brings fans closer together than a prematurely-canceled amazing television show.”

Monique

“My favorite fandom is Harry Potter, I named a child after a character in the series, awaited book debuts and lamented over many, many movies. BUT, if I won, I would have to choose the epic Storm poster.”
