Etsy Crush of the Week & Giveaway: Show Pony’s Fantasy Jewelry

show pony etsy shop banner

I’m a jewelry fiend, whether it’s geeky or not. I’ve noticed when it comes to a lot of geek-related jewelry they get an A+ on the geeky part, but miss the mark on the actual quality of the jewelry design. Thankfully, I stumbled across Show Pony on one of my weekly Etsy binges and fell in love. Her  fantasy-themed references already make the items a must-buy, and then her elegant jewelry designs put them over the edge.

I featured Show Pony‘s “Always” necklace on my Harry Potter & Valentine’s Day Jewelry Post. It’s pretty much one of those, “I need this for reasons.” necklaces. It’s a subtle way to show your off Potter pride. I absolutely adore mine!

Shelby also does custom pieces! I had her make a custom Game of Thrones/Song of Ice and Fire cuff for me with the words, “Valar Morghulis”. It came out just as I imagined. It’s thick, but still easily bendable to adjust to any sized wrist. I’m throwing a giveaway with a few lovely items from Show Pony, check out how to win below!

Interview with Shelby of SHOW PONY STORE

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

Show Pony- Hunger Games Holding nightlock IIShelby: My name is Shelby Isaac I’m a college student from Maryland, U.S.A. and Etsy is my creative outlet/moneymaker. I have a pet tarantula and a kitten that keep me company while I run my Etsy business.

How long have you been making jewelry?

Shelby: I’ve been making jewelry since 2010, when I opened my Etsy shop.

How did SHOWPONYSTORE come to be?

Shelby: Oddly enough, I started out making my original items out of frustration. My first purchase on Etsy was an overpriced Harry Potter inspired vial necklace. When it arrived, it was broken, leaking through the package, and no “thank you” note was included. I knew I could make something better for a cheaper price, so that’s what I did.

Which have been some of your favorite pieces to make?

Shelby: My “always” doe patronus necklace is my favorite. It’s subtle and still geeky. That’s not always easy to find in jewelry.

Do you have any geeky obsessions? If so what?

Shelby: Any other geeky obsessions… I love Tolkien and Martin. High fantasy is my thing.

What do you think your your patronus be?

Shelby: It would be a shark! A little one. Like a spiny dogfish/mud shark.

If you lived in Westeros, what would your house name, sigil and motto be?

Shelby: I already consider myself to be of House Tyrell, so creating my own house is out of the question. Growing strong!

If you were on a deserted island what video game, comic/book, movie, TV show would you bring?

Shelby: I would bring the Potter series. Television show that I couldn’t live without: Star Trek. The original series.

Etsy Crush of the Week: Tom Kurzanski’s Doctor Who Valentine’s Day Cards

doctor who valentines day cards tom kurzanski

I love my Doctor Who Valentine’s Day cards as much as Rose loves Ten! Okay… that may be a bit extreme, but I do like them a whole lot! The card stock is thick and they are printed in great quality. I like that Tom’s cards are a mix of some of the older characters like Daleks and Cybermen as well as new ones like Oswin and the Silence. These V-day cards are a great way to whisper sweet nothing’s to your favorite Doctor Who fan!

Interview with Tom Kurzanski:

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

Tom KurzanskiI’m an illustrator and designer based out of Centennial, Colorado – a Navy brat whose time growing up was spent traveling along a dotted map line that Indiana Jones would be proud of. Now I’m content to doodle the days away creating comics, parody art, and t-shirts alongside my fiancé, Annie, and our pup, Lucy.

How long have you been illustrating?

Since I was three. My dad sent me a simple drawing of a Knight while he was away on a ship, and I took it upon myself to flip it over and do my own version. This led to creating my own comics and stories under the kitchen table. I attribute my creativity to my sister, who shoved a crayon up my nose on a long car trip, lodging it snugly against my brain.

How would you describe your artistic style?

Transformative and effervescent, with subtle earthy notes… or maybe fluid, cartoonish jokery.

Favorite artists?Doctor Who Valentines Day Cards by Tom Kurzanski

Tough question to answer, as there are so many artists I love the work of – many of them comic artists. Brian Hurtt, Les McClaine, Kazu Kibuishi, Darwyn Cooke, Roger Langridge, TaraMcPherson, Linda Medley, Mike Allred, Philip Bond, D’Israeli, Eduardo Risso, Tony Millionaire, John Currin… I could go on for ages.

Since you’re a fellow Doctor Who fan I’ve got to ask, who is your favorite doctor and favorite companion?

My favorite Doctor remains the seventh. While I love the Doctors who have come since, Sylvester McCoy introduced me to Doctor Who during my three-year stay in the UK. His dark clown with the trademark umbrella will always hold a special place in my heart. I had a crush on his sidekick, Ace, but as a companion Rory Williams cannot be beat.

Tom Baker/4 had the scarf and Matt Smith/11 has the bow tie. What would your signature item be if you were the Doctor?

A full, glorious beard. Out of which I would pull various objects, as needed.

What else are you a fanboy for?

Venture Brothers, Futurama, Adventure Time, Regular Show, Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Supernatural, Twin Peaks, the Parker books, Parks & Rec, Community, Nerdist, the Thrilling Adventure Hour, D&D, and Paul F. Tompkins.

Doctor Who Valentines Day Cards by Tom Kurzanski 2If you were on a deserted island what would video game, comic/book, movie, TV show would you bring?

Video game– Dark Souls (so I could finally get around to playing it)

Book– Saul Bass: A Life in Film and Design (I never get tired of drooling over his work)

Movie—Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure

TV Show—Secret Agent, a.k.a Danger Man (I love re-watching it when I can, and there are a million episodes)

Etsy Crush of the Week & Giveaway- Nerdy Hussy

During my weekly Etsy binge, I was searching for comic book decoupage goodies and stumbled across Nerdy Hussy shop and immediately ordered a Batman flask! (And it’s just as amazing as it looks) After interviewing Carrie I discovered we pretty much have the same pull list. Find out all about Carrie, how she got into crafting and all of the geekery she loves. Oh there’s a giveaway too! See details below.

The flask I got from Nerdy Hussy! (Surrounded by Arkham Asylum)

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Carrie of Nerd Hussy sporting Captain America earrings she made.

Carrie of Nerd Hussy sporting Captain America earrings she made.

Carrie: I live in a small town in Illinois but live very close to St. Louis, MO. I work as a Case Manager for an agency that advocates for the prevention and treatment of HIV. I consider myself a feminine feminist, I love wearing dresses, makeup, and jewelry and advocating for gender equality, education, and eliminating homophobia. I believe that socially constructed gender roles should not interfere with a person’s interests. Isn’t that what being a nerd is all about; liking something even if it’s considering uncool?

How long have you been crafting?

Carrie: Since I was very young. As a child I would request craft kits and paint supplies as presents. I was a creative child, I once used my older sister’s liquid foundation to create a beautiful wall mural…i.e., I covered my hands in foundation and made hand prints all over her room.

How did Nerdy Hussy come to be?

Carrie: It started as a hobby, mostly watercolor paintings that I would sell in a different Etsy shop, it wasn’t too popular but I had a lot of fun doing it. Slowly my crafting became exceedingly reflective of my nerdy personality and a coworker suggested I start selling the nerdy crafts on Etsy; however, the products were not congruent with the other store front, so I scrapped the other shop and created the NerdyHussy, specializing in geeky products.

Do you have any funny crafting stories?

Carrie: No animals were harmed in this story. For a few months I was doing most of my crafting on the floor, I would spread out all the materials I needed and watch Star Trek while creating items for Etsy. My cat found this incredibly interesting and took it upon herself to treat it as an adventure, investigating every scrap piece of paper, tissue paper, or product. After I had finished crafting for the night, I noticed my cat was trying to get something off her paw; she was licking it and trying to flick it off her paw. She had a piece of comic book stuck to her paw. She had stepped on one of the scrap pieces that still had the water-based glue on it and managed to glue it to her paw, the glue is non-toxic and removable with soap and water so I washed her paw off and removed the glue and comic book. I have since moved from the floor to a sectioned off part of the living room with a table and shelves, no cats allowed.

I know you do custom pieces for customers, have you had any favorite or unusual requests?

Carrie: My favorite requests are the ones who force me to broaden my nerd knowledge. I know very little about Transformers but when I first started, I had a request for a Ratchet necklace, with a little research I was able to make the necklace and she was incredibly happy and I was able to learn a little more about Transformers.

Do you have any favorite comic books and comic book characters?Nerd Hussy Comic Book Shoes Made to Order

Carrie: Yes, definitely! My favorite comic book from DC is probably the New 52 of Wonder Woman, my favorite Image comic book is Saga written by Brian K. Vaughn and artist Fiona Staples and my favorite Marvel comic book is Hawkeye, so far. As for comic book characters, most strong female characters such as Wonder Woman or Carol Danvers as Captain Marvel. I roughly have 15 comic books in my pull and hold at my local comic book shop, not including the trade paperbacks I read.

Do you have any (other) geeky obsessions? If so what?

Carrie: I have an obsession with Firefly, Doctor Who, and Star Trek — in order of favorite The Next Generation, The Original Series, Deep Space Nine, Enterprise, and then Voyager. I get so excited when I watch any of these shows that I’ll clap like a misguided penguin trying to fly.

I also game. Once a week I play a table top RPG that’s similar to Dungeons and Dragons called Pathfinder. In addition, once or twice a month I play board games such as Settlers of Catan and Dominion.

I enjoy going to conventions but I’m fairly new to them, I’ve only been going the past couple years. I’m looking forward to attending C2E2 in Chicago and GenCon in Indianapolis in 2013.

If you were a superhero what would your name and power be?

Carrie: Easy question, Boobarella with a transgender rooster named Cock Punch. During the day, we would educate men and women on healthy relationships and at night, fight crime.

If you were on a deserted island what video game, comic/book, movie, TV show would you bring?

Carrie: I would bring my Nook, Laptop, and the collection of Sandman by Neil Gaiman.
Where can we find you in the web?
Carrie: Where can I be found on the web? In addition to the Etsy shop, I have a Facebook page Facebook.com/NerdyHussy and I can be emailed at nerdyhussy[@]gmail[dot]com. I have some pictures on Facebook how my products hold up over time and pictures of custom orders I’ve done in the past. Occasionally, I’ll post a promotional coupon code.

Etsy Crush of the Week: Word To Your Unicorn

word to your unicornI met Leslie of Word to Your Unicorn like everyone else meets most people nowadays, on the internet. We instantly  became blogging buddies and then turned into internet friends (Facebook makes everything official). In October our geek girl worlds collided when I met her IRL at NYCC! Other than being her friend I’m a big fan of her blog, designs and overall kawaiiness. I was thrilled to hear that she opened an Etsy shop featuring stickers and buttons that are, to quote one of her items, “Whimsical as f*ck”! Find out more about Lelsie and her wonderful world of unicorns, cupcakes and geekery.

jamila and leslie

Pink Dalek Leslie and I at New York Comic Con 2012!

Promo code for 50% from Word to Your Unicorn Etsy Shop: girlgonegeek50

Can you tell us a little about yourself?

leslieLeslie: I’m a geek girl, kawaii fanatic, & costumed fancy pants living in Northeastern PA with a blogging obsession. I do design & marketing by day and blogging (darlingstewie.com) & web design by night. I also design super kawaii whimsical geeky such as stickers, pins, & other fun print items at my etsy store, Word to your unicorn. I apparently do too much.

How long have you been designing?

Leslie: I started doing web design geocities style at the age of 13. This, fueled by a fire of Mountain Dew and Pokemon, led me to become this funky geek girl, cosplayer, and asian adorable kawaii mish mash that I am.

What made you decide to start your blog Darling Stewie, and what is it about?

Leslie: I was obsessed with the internet but I felt like… for all the time I was spending on it – I had nothing. I thought a blog could be a showcase of the things I create (web sites, adorable stickers, cute outfits, costumes) and the things I find (kawaii jewelry, geeky things, memes, cartoons, silliness) but showcased in a cool professionally silly way. I also do freelance web/graphic design so I was hoping to showcase my portfolio to get some more business.

What’s Word To Your Unicorn’s origin story?

Leslie: I felt like I could make cool things people might want to buy … so I started designing stickers. Inspired by the adorable and the geeky, I found myself leaning towards sugary sweet designs like cupcakes, mixed with geeky Doctor Who and Ninja Turtles nonsense. I plan to make a lot more designs and spawn them into notecards, prints, maybe even tshirts or something. I’m trying to see what the demand is and go from there.

Do you have any plans for future designs? Doctor Who Stationery Set - 4 Notecards

Leslie: I plan to design a Powerpuff Girls / cat mash up and probably some Adventure Time moustaches.

What are you a fangirl for?

Leslie: Hardcore fangirl for Harry Potter, Firefly, Game of Thrones, Sailor Moon, Star Wars, anything Tim Burton, Bobs Burgers and anything Loren Bouchard.

The fourth doctor had the scarf, the eleventh doctor has the bow tie. What would your signature clothing item be if you were the twelfth doctor?

Leslie: A giant pink bow on the top of my head. God I hope the twelth doctor is a woman. How epic would that be??

Which fictional character is your fashion icon?

Leslie: I love Luna Lovegood’s funky thrift store style. I rock River Tam on occasion… I can be seen in a flowered dress and combat boots. Oh and sometimes a mix between Lydia from Beetlejuice’s gothy style and Strawberry Shortcake fluffy cute babydoll dresses. Random, ain’t it?

If you were on a deserted island what video game, comic/book, movie, TV show would you bring?

Animal Crossing, Harry Potter, Amelie and LOST for irony’s sake.

Etsy Crush of the Week- Lara Theme

When I browse the Lara Theme Etsy shop it feels like I’m in Kirby’s Dream Land because everything is really cute and really soft and looks really tasty (although you shouldn’t eat it).

I ordered a Totoro, because honestly how could I not, and Lara made me a custom Mega Man that I’ll give to my brother for his birthday. I couldn’t be happier with the way they came out! The quality of the material and craftsmanship is wonderful. I know my way around the hand-made crochet and plushie shops on Etsy and a lot of them are pricy. So I’m glad to say that Lara’s shop is extremely affordable which makes deciding on which item to get easier (get them all!).

My Totoro and custom Mega Man plushie by Lara Theme

Interview with Lara of Lara Theme Etsy Shop:

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Lara: My name’s Lara. I’m a 23 year old girl from Scotland with a serious coffee addiction. I care for two children: my 5 year old son, and my 27 year old boyfriend. I can usually be found on the sofa with my nose in my Kindle, in front of my sewing machine, or getting excited over something happening in space that nobody cares about but I still ramble on about anyway.

How long have you been crafting and making jewelry?

Lara: Honestly, not very long at all. I think it was roughly 18 months ago that I came across a really cute tutorial on a blog, showing you how to make a felt hair clip. It all started from there!

How did Lara Theme Shop come to be?

Lara: I realised that I couldn’t carry on creating all this stuff and keeping it myself – I don’t have enough room for it all! That, plus a bit of nudging from family and friends, made me decide to start selling on Etsy!

Which have been some of your favorite pieces to make?

Lara: It changes all the time. At the moment, I’m really enjoying making polymer clay necklaces, especially the octopuses!

What are you a fangirl for?

Lara: The Dragon Age games. It’s ridiculous how much I adore Alistair and Fenris!

If you could live in any Studio Ghibli/Myazaki film for a month, which would it be and why?

Lara: Ponyo! I reckon my little boy would get on well with Sōsuke.

If you were on a deserted island what video game, book, movie and TV show would you bring?

Lara:

Video game – definitely Dragon Age Origins.

Book – tough one… would have to be The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. Maybe then I’d finally get it finished!

Movie – Sunshine.

TV show – Probably the Big Bang Theory!

Interview with Nick of NH Vinyls Etsy Shop:

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

Nick: My name is Nick, and ever since I was little I have always been to cars and the art world. The one thing I aspire to in life is to be happy, as I believe everything falls in place when your happy. When I am working on cars or drawing new designs, I feel happy, and doing something you love is the best feeling in the world.

Where do you get the inspiration for all of your designs?

Nick: Recently I have been watching a lot of old cartoons on Netflix. I think that’s how I was first inspired to start my poster art collection. It reminded of the days of my younger years where the most important thing was Saturday morning cartoons.

How would you describe your artistic style?

If you were a mutant, what would your name and power be?

Nick: I would have to be Ironed Claws or something like that. It would be a mix of Iron Man and Wolverine. I love the science and technology behind the Iron Man suits, and Wolverine is just unstoppable practically. With self-healing and a iron suit, you can’t go wrong.

If you were on a deserted island what video game, comic/book, movie, TV show would you bring?

Etsy Crush of the Week & Giveaway- Ketchupize

When I first wandered onto Ketchupize during one of my weekly Etsy binges, I kind of lost my mind a little at her amazing items. Tina hand-paints absolutely incredible headphones, sunglasses and phone cases. When it comes to geek merch, it’s hard to find something new and interesting that makes you excited and I felt that excitement again when I look at Ketchupize’s Etsy shop. Tina’s shop features everything from Super Mario Bros.  and galaxy sunglasses, to a pokeball and companion cube headphones.

It literally took me a few weeks to narrow down and decide on which item to buy and review. I finally decided on the companion cube headphones for obvious reasons. I waited for the package like a kid waiting for Santa. When my companion cube headphones arrived I literally did a little happy dance. The hand-painted companion cube is damn near perfect. They are extra special because I know that someone spent time painting the details by hand. That someone being Tina. Other than being very pretty to look at, the headphones are great quality and sound.

Interview with Tina of Ketchupize Etsy Shop

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
My name is Tina, I’m a graphic designer and I live in Greece. I love music, video games, sci-fi movies, comics and all kinds of geeky things my parents thought I would grow out of when I reached 16!

How did the Ketchupize Etsy shop come to be?
It all started about two years ago. I wanted to create a unique gift for someone special. It was a pair of headphones and I decided to paint it. The whole process was so much fun and I loved the result. That’s how Ketchupize was born. It allows me to combine all the things I love and it’s really fulfilling, designing functional products for people who appreciate uniqueness and want something different and fun!

I know you do custom pieces for customers, have you had any favorite or unusual requests?
One of my favorite requests was a pair of ”video games” themed headphones. I was contacted by a girl who wanted some custom headphones inspired from her favorite video games. They were some of my favorite video games too so it became more of a personal project and it was so much fun to make.

Are there any upcoming designs you’re looking forward to creating?
I try to come up with new designs as often as I can as it keeps things fun and interesting. My sunglasses line became quite popular during the summer so I thought of customizing normal glasses too. I’m currently working on new designs so I’m looking forward to that, hopefully they’ll be a big hit!

What are some of your favorite geeky obsessions?
My favorite geeky obsession is gaming. I’ve been a gamer since I was allowed near a computer or console. Through the years I’ve tried all kinds of different games and no matter how busy I am I always make time for that. Lately I’ve been playing Diablo 3 and I’m really looking forward to trying all classes in the new Guild Wars 2!

If you were on a deserted island what video game, comic/book, movie, TV show would you bring?
I’d bring my ”Big Bang Theory” box set! It’s my favorite tv series. It’s so brilliantly made I can watch all seasons over and over again and it always makes me laugh.
