Interview with Sci-fi & Fantasy photographer Darrell of BGZ Studios

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

Darrell: My name is Darrell and I currently live in the Atlanta area. I photograph awesome cosplay and costumes from all over the country.. i absolutely love the community and love comics and anime.

How long have you been a photographer?

Darrell: I have been using film since the High School ages (I am 28 now) – I have been photographing professionally for about 7 years – I own numerous contracts with agencies and catalogs.

What made you want to focus on shooting sci-fi and fantasy projects?

Darrell: I have been a nerd my whole life.  Comics and being a gamer used to NOT be the cool thing to do when I was in school.. and now suddenly it is.. shows you my luck..

Any plans for future sf/f projects?

Darrell: I have a couple up my sleeve and on paper for planning. This weekend I will be shooting a Psylocke in a Matrix replica Dojo.. excited about that. I also have some plans for another big x-men shoot :)

If you were on a deserted island what would video game, comic/book, movie, TV show would you bring?

Darrell:  I wouldn’t bring any of that.. I’d bring a camera and lots of memory cards :).. because a deserted island has to have some epic places to photograph!

Where can we find you in the web?

Darrell: I am mostly active on my fanpage – http://www.facebook.com/bgzstudios – You can also follow me on twitter @BGZ_Studios

Doctor Who Cosplay at NYCC

Even though New York Comic Con was weeks ago but it’s never too late to see some Doctor Who cosplay amirite?! This was actually my first time cosplaying ever! It was so much fun, I was a femme Eleven! I ended up stumbling across this massive Whovian cosplay photo op meetup. I asked to take a picture with an Amy and a girl told me that at 1pm we’d have all the Doctor Who cosplayers (they could find) meetup for a huge group picture. So of course until 1pm came along we still took dozens of pictures while we waited. Enjoy the pictures!

Here are a few of my favs!

The TV Geeks Podcast Episode 4- New York Comic Con Recap

This episode my brother Myles (@rabble_rowser) was the special guest! New York Comic Con and Anime Festival was this weekend and it was a blast!

We talk about the con craziness, cosplay, panels, screenings and video game demos. Myles is a huge gamer and was able to play a lot of demos including The Darkness 2, Kirby’s Return to Dreamland, Zelda Skyward Sword and more and gives his reviews of those games.

I was able to attend The Avengers panel which was amazing (with super special guests) and The Walking Dead panel and screened an anime Blue Exorcist. It was a Geek Christmas!

For some great cosplay pictures of the NYCC /NYAF check out girlgonegeekblog.com and facebook.com/girlgonegeekblog.

New York Comic Con and New York Anime Fest 2011- Day 1

Sensory overload!

NYCC/NYAF is here and I’m beyond excited. It’s my geek Christmas!  The con was open for a few hours on Thursday for press, professionals, VIP and 4-day pass holders.

Of course I was there in my dalek shirt trying to see as much as I could without the massive crowd that will attend Friday-Sunday. I’ll be there every damn day so if you’re at New York Comic Con/New York Anime Fest hit me up on @girl_gone_geek or email me at girlgonegeekblog[at]gmail[dot]com and say hi IRL!

Enjoy these cosplay pics from day 1!

HalloweenCostumes.com Zombie School Girl Review

Halloween is next month and if you’re like me, you’ve been thinking about your next costume since last year. Last year I was Luigi and this year I will be a Zombie School Girl! The costume was provided by HalloweenCostumes.com. They have an enormous amount of costumes ranging from infants to adults and a bunch of great geek themed costumes as well.

Now us geeks like playing dress up so we don’t need to wait until October 31st like everyone else to throw on a cape or Vader helmet. So if you can’t make your costume for the next con, I recommend buying it from Halloween Costumes, I’m sure they have something to satisfy your cosplay craving.

First off it took me literally days to decide on a costume to review because there were so many I liked. I’ve done cute and “sexy” costumes before but this year I wanted to switch things up and get the Zombie School Girl costume. I love the undead and it was about time I became one and the Zombie School Girl Costume wanted my brains.

My Zombie School Girl costume came in the mail and I immediately tried it on and it fit perfectly. I threw on some makeshift zombie makeup and took some pics, but no smiling because zombies don’t smile! I never had a school uniform so I couldn’t have made the costume myself at home, and even if I did I don’t think it would look nearly as good. The costume came with a ripped tie, a plaid skirt. But the best part was the charcoal gray jacket with attached shirt equipped with blood stains, ripped and frayed on the edges and even a gross rubber bloody gash! When Halloween comes around I’ll probably make it extra school girly and get some knee-high stockings, mary jane shoes and fake blood.

I recommend you head over to HalloweenCostumes.com for your costume and cosplay needs for the next convention or Halloween Party. They ship quickly and have a flat rate of $4.99 and have a great sale section which it sure beats the fighting crowds at costume stores during Halloween season.

Disclosure – I was provided the Zombie School Girl costume for a review, however, all thoughts an opinions are my own and I wasn’t paid for this post.  Thank you HalloweenCostumes.com for providing the costume for this review!

Anime Burlesque

Calling All Otakus!

From the same people who brought you the Sci-fi, Video Game and Star Wars Burlesque Shows, now comes Anime Burlesque. These burlesque dancers take on (just to take it off) some of your favorite female anime characters.

“Devil’s Playground returned to Bordello on January 8 for Anime Babes, a burlesque show dedicated to Japanese animation favorites. Characters from Pokemon, Tokyo Mew Mew, Fullmetal Alchemist, Sailor Moon, Speed Racer and Neon Genesis Evangelion made an appearance throughout the night. (LA Weekly)”

But wait, they don’t have Faye (Cowboy Bebop)?! Come on! They wouldn’t even have to sex-up her outfit either since her gravity defying short shorts which barely supported by suspenders, cropped shirt are revealing enough to start with. Well here’s hoping they have a part two, since they have done that with previous shows.  Who would you want to see burlesqued up if they have a part two?

I’m happy that Devil’s Playground does these Geeky Burlesque shows but to be honest I feel like I’ve seen better cosplay at cons #imjustsayin.

Read a review of the show here from Liz’s article: “Anime Babes from Sailor Moon to Rei Ayanami: This Isn’t Cosplay, This is Burlesque”
