Tattoo Tuesday Featurette- Alexia’s Studio Ghibli Tattoo

Alexia’s tattoo was done by Tom Pickett at Bespoke Tattoos in Guildford, Surrey

As you can tell by now, I’m a big fan of tattoos. But there’s something about Miyazaki related tattoos that I love more than others. I even wrote a Thank You Letter to Miyazki, explaining my love for the animation genius.

So when Alexia emailed me her darling tattoo inspired by the Studio Ghibli Great Collection, I instantly fell in love. My next tattoo will be a quote from Sandman, but recently I’ve been considering a Ghibli/Miyazaki related tattoo. Of course, if that happens I’ll blog all about it!

Tattoo Tuesday Featurette Interview with Alexia

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

My names Alexia Christofi, I’m a 21-year-old girl from London, but I’m at university in Portsmouth studying computer games technology.

What is your tattoo of and why did you get it?

My tattoos a Studio Ghibli inspired piece, it’s the front cover of the Studio Ghibli Great Collection. I’m a massive Miyazaki fan and have been since I was younger, I can watch the films over and over and still be impressed every time. I figure if I was going to have something permanent on my skin it may as well be something beautiful that I’m passionate about!

Do you have any other tattoos?

I have a small heart on my wrist. Pretty cliché but a best friend and I decided to get matching tattoos, and it’s simple and small enough to not be overbearing.

Any plans for future tattoos?

I have at least 2 more planned, one is my daughter’s name in Greek on my wrist, but my biggest one is a Howls Moving Castle sleeve. I need to first find someone who’s brilliant enough to do it though, it’s pretty intricate!

Favorite Miyazaki movie?

Favourite would probably have to be Howls Moving Castle. My best friend and I probably watch it at least twice a month!

Which character from a Miyazaki movie would you love to have as a pet?

I’d love to have a totoro as a pet, I’m not sure why but they’ve just always appealed to me!

What are your other favorite fandoms?

I’m not sure I really have any other favourites, I suppose I read a lot of books and play a lot of games but I rarely find myself focusing a lot of my energy on one thing!

Where can we find you in the web?

I have a twitter and a tumblr, but I be honest they’re both just full of pictures from my instagram and random reboots and retweets, but feel free to follow if you want to anyway! :D

Tattoo Tuesday- Samurai Champloo

I’m extremely picky with my anime, but Samurai Champloo is damn near perfect in my eyes. But what else would you expect from the great Shinichirō Watanabe? The animation is sharper than Mugan’s mouth and the soundtrack is smoother than Jin’s swordplay. I was head-over-heels in love with Mugen and Jin. How could you not adore bad boy Mugen and his b-boy fighting skills?! Or admire the reserved and mysterious Jin? And can someone please tell me how Fuu manages to eat all that food! I’m sure Momo is hiding somewhere in the folds of blog post. Champloo was beautiful, hilarious and touching at the same time. Simply put, it was a damn good anime.

You can’t talk about Samurai Champloo without including the opening credits.

I include all the information about the tattoo that was available. If you’re interested in your tattoo being featured on a past or future Tattoo Tuesday or Tattoo Tuesday Featurette, email me at jamila[@]girlgonegeekblog[.]com.

Tattoo Tuesday Featurette- Terrell’s Cowboy Bebop x Anubis Ink

cowboy bebop anubis tattoo terrell

Terrell is my IRL friend. I’ve known him for a few years now and he is one of my few friends that I can actually talk to about my numerous geeky obsessions because he’s pretty obsessed too. We always seem to talk about Cowboy Bebop, because, well… it’s Bebop! He’ll end up talking about his crush on Faye, and I always gush about having the hots for Spike. Terrell is also a talented graphic designer and musical artist. Check out the interview to find out the inspiration for his incredibly amazing Spike Spiegel and Anubis mashup tattoo he designed.

If you’re interested in being featured in a Tattoo Tuesday or Tattoo Tuesday Featurette please email me at girlgonegeekblog(@)gmail(dot)com.

Tattoo Tuesday Featurette Interview with Terrell:

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Terrell: My name is Terrell Coakley, I am an aspiring artist in the fields of both music and graphic design. I have a small addiction to the cinemas (small as in I have a plethora of random movie quotes in my head from films that most people my age haven’t even heard of.) and I can sleep through an atomic bomb, given enough blankets.

You designed your Spike Spiegel/Anubis tattoo, where did you get the inspiration to mash up Cowboy Bebop and Egyptian mythology?

Terrell: I started to have dreams about Anubis, that were very interesting, so I began to research more about him. I talked to my professor, Kaba Kamene, he gave me some background information and I realized that Impu (Anubis) was my egyptian astrological deity. Well that idea just HAD to become a tattoo. I didn’t want to get him in his original egyptian form, however, because I thought I would want to better represent the person I am now. Being that I LOVE Spike Spiegel, ( I seriously want to be like him when I grow up and or become a famous anime character, whichever happens first) I thought, why not give Anubis Spike’s trademark swaggerific single breast space suit. So I put the pen to the paper, and now its a permanent mark on my arm.

Do you have any other tattoos?

Terrell: I have seven tattoos, all in simple outline, very minimalist. I don’t think too much detail or shading compliments my skin tone. I have two outlines of africa on my forearms, that become one image when I put my arms together, a koi fish, a dragon, a phoenix, words across my chest in phonetics, and Anubis is the most recent.

Any plans for future tattoos?

Terrell: Tattoos are so addictive…I think I want about 4 or 5 more, specifically inspired by Kemetics. but I always wait until I find something with meaning, so that I wont be too upset when I’m looking in the mirror at age 70.

What are some of your other favorite geeky things?

Terrell: Like most guys I love video games, and high tech geeky gadgets, but I think my obsession with Spiderman probably takes the cake…Still upset about spiderman 3 though.

If you were on a deserted island what video game, comic/book, movie, TV show would you bring?

Terrell: I would bring my original copy of final fantasy VII, though I’ve beat the game with friends, I never actually beat it on my own playstation. I think that would occupy a lovely amount of time. of course I would want to bring Watchmen…but as of late I’ve gotten really addicted to the comic stylings of Jason (John Arne Sæterøy) so I might actually want to bring “pocket full of rain” thats an amazing comic book. As far as a movie I would have to bring ‘Coming to America’..only because that shit will NEVER get old. I would bring ‘How I Met Your Mother’ for a tv show, as long as I could get the script for when ted actually meets this chick! but since he probably wont ever meet her, I’d just bring Bebop.

Where can we find you in the web?

Terrell: Hit me up on Tumblr:, and Twitter: @northstarbrooks … Facebook is gonna die soon, but you can check out some of my music there if your ears need to pleasure:

Tattoo Tuesday Featurette- LunaRae’s Yoshi and Full Metal Alchemist Ink

LunaRae was one of the first people to contact me about adding her Yoshi tattoos to a Tattoo Tuesday post, thus sparking the “Reader Submission” idea. Thanks LunaRae! Get to know the delightful LunaRae and the heartwarming meaning behind her tattoos.

If you’re interested in being featured in a Tattoo Tuesday or Tattoo Tuesday Featurette please email me at girlgonegeekblog(@)gmail(dot)com.

Tattoo Tuesday Featurette Interview with LunaRae:

Can you tell us a little but about yourself?
Hmm.. Well, I’m in college working on a degree in ASLIS (American Sign Language Interpreter Studies). I took an ASL class and just fell in love with it. I started playing video games before I was even in grade school. My first game was Super Mario Brothers 3 on NES. I have many hobbies other than video games such as reading, pole dancing, spinning flag or saber, photography, writing short stories and poetry, as well as drawing.
What are your tattoos of and why did you get them?
I have three tattoos at this moment. I have a green Yoshi that I got December 2010. I had always wanted to get all of the colors of Yoshi on me in some kind of band or something. I contacted an old high school friend, Amber Bananafish, to speak with her about getting it done. It was my first and I was nervous but it was something I felt I needed to do. I found that all too often, I lost who I was and what I stood for. I allowed other people to control my life and I decided I was done with that silliness. This Yoshi reminds me to always be true to myself in every way possible. It also gives me courage to do things that are hard or scary. Oddly enough I’m horrified of needles, shots, and blood. Yet I allowed Amber to tattoo me for two hours. I can do anything!

My second tattoo is a blue Yoshi with wings holding another blue Yoshi egg. I had planned this tattoo shortly after getting my first one. My grandmother had passed away in 2005 and it was something that took me years to deal with. The color I picked was the color of her old house. A place that brings back great memories for me, but sadly is no longer in our family. Then I met Josh Fetz, we became really good friends very quickly. He passed away in October from Cystic Fibrosis. I added the egg for him because he was so young in his life, where as my grandmother had lived a long life. Oddly enough, Josh’s birthstone is the same color blue I had planned on making the Yoshi. I was going to wait until December to get this as kind of a “happy birthday Yoshi…now I have two..” type thing, but in the wake of Josh’s passing I decided to get it as soon as I possibly could, which ended up being November 12th 2011. Amber was able to fit me in quickly and did another wonderful job.

My third tattoo is the Ourboros tattoo seen in the anime Fullmetal Alchemist as well as Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. It signifies eternity, a dragon continually eating it’s tail. It has a beginning but no end. The seven deadly sins are branded with this logo in various places of their body. My favorite of them would be Lust, but I’m not too keen on getting a chest piece. (Don’t get me wrong some are stunning and gorgeous, but just not for me.) This was a Valentine’s gift to myself. It reminds me of various things, but most importantly I need to be careful in the things I do. Amber did this piece for me Feb. 11th 2012.

Any plans for future tattoos?
Yes! One of my oldest and closest friends are getting semi matching tattoos. In the movie The Lion King Rafiki draws Simba on a tree. My friend has the adult version with a mane where as I am getting the younger version. No matter what has happened between us in our lives, we have always come back together and been there for each other when we needed it most.
I also want to get a Sailor Mars tattoo. She is my favorite Sailor Scout and the show Sailor Moon has a very special place in my heart. It was the first anime I ever watched. I can’t even explain how it captivates me. I’m not sure how I want this tattoo to look yet or where, but I’ve got time to think about it.
I’m also still debating on whether or not I want to finish my original plan of getting all the different color Yoshi. So far I have green and baby blue, and I would need to get red, yellow, dark blue/purple. I’m just unsure where I would put them since the other two are so big.
What are you other favorite fandom’s?
Sailor Moon, Fullmetal Alchemist/Brotherhood, The Simpsons, Dexter, X-men, Batman, The Lion King, and werewolves.
If you were on a deserted island what video game, comic/book, movie, TV show would you bring?
Super Mario World (because I never get sick of it), Blood and Chocolate by Annette Curtis Klause or Orange Crush by Tim Dorsey, The Dark Knight, and most likely Dexter season 4 or the Simpsons (any season 1-8)
Where do you live on the internet?
I’m on Facebook of course, though I keep that personal. I do have a photography page there “LunaRae Photography“. I am also on Deviantart, LunaRaeB.

Tattoo Tuesday Featurette- Bonnie’s Zelda, Totoro & Portal Tattoos

I’m pretty sure you love Tattoo Tuesday as much as I do. Sadly enough I don’t do them every Tuesday, because frankly they take a very long time to compose. But I’ve found a way to give you your weekly dose of nerd ink every Tuesday! I was inspired by Bonnie’s geeky trio of tattoos to start a Tattoo Tuesday Featurette series. I wanted to know more about her, her tats and what makes her squee. So I asked her!

If you’re interested in being featured in a Tattoo Tuesday or Tattoo Tuesday Featurette please email me at girlgonegeekblog(@)gmail(dot)com.

Tattoo Tuesday Featurette Interview with Bonnie Williams:

Girl Gone Geek: Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Bonnie: I’ve been a gamer since I was four years old, I remember the day my dad brought in a SNES that my uncle didn’t want anymore plus Street Fighter II and Super Mario World with it. I was hooked from then with the only difference being that I’m more heavily into PC games now but still play console games, gosh it’s been two decades now!

What are your tattoos of and why did you get them?

I first got Navi from The Legend of Zelda tattoo’d on my left shoulder, I choose this location as it felt fitting since she couldn’t exactly be tattood in the air next to me so she’s always by my side, she was Links companion and I wanted something simple, recognisable and cute for the general audience who haven’t a clue about the game series, she was a combination of the cartoon and 3D versions of her. The Legend of Zelda was my first game obsession and love which is still pursued even now and felt like the Zelda series has always played a part in my life important enough to represent.

My next tattoo was several months later and almost on impulse, I played a game called Portal in 2010 and didn’t think I’d get in with the hype of the game but I did even if I struggled, I managed to complete it and fully enjoy it, I felt this was an accomplishment and I was proud of myself. The companion cube symbolises a lot in the game and after seeing a friends t-shirt from the Valve store I fell in love with the design and decided to get it on my forearm although I do regret getting the complete design and intend to cover up the two lines underneath the companion cube alhough with what I can’t decide yet.

My most recent tattoo was half an impulse as I’d been thinking about getting a tattoo involving my love for rainbows and I wanted to combine it with something else I loved to make it extra special. I looked for ideas ranging from cute things I loved such as strawberries to things like soot sprites from Studio Ghibli. In the end I found someones artwork on DeviantArt and asked to use their image, I’ve always gone to a place in Brighton called The Wizard of Ink and this time I gave them a bit ore of a challenge and made a few changes such as adding deeper sketchier lines as my tattoos all have that little touch, they suggested adding their own style of clouds to it to which I agreed too. It was the most painful and longest of my tattoos and he’s on my right shoulder holding an umbrella forming a rainbow behind it as if he’s floating through the sky over my shoulder.

Was there a moment that you realized you went from liking to loving Totoro, Zelda and Portal?

With Zelda I remember falling in love with it when I was five or six years old from the first scene of playing A Link to the Past and it’s stuck ever since. With Portal I didn’t think I’d love it like I do so that surprise made me even more fonder for the game although I’ve yet to play Portal 2 I love it already. Totoro was a love I didn’t understand at first, why did all these people love such a simple and dull film? I wanted to love Totoro too but I didn’t understand but after watching the film a second time I was deeply in love with the Totoro character and the film “My Neighbour Totoro”, I’ve spoken to others who have felt the same after watching it two times too and I don’t think I’ll ever stop loving the Japanese equilevant to Disney which is Studio Ghibli, if I have children they’re being brought up on these films!

Do you have any plans for future tattoos?

Yes actually, I intend to get a dragon of some sort, perhaps Haku from Spirited Away so I’ve got another link to something else I love but it’s always an issue as to where and what size you’d like the tattoo although I’ve also got my best firend of seventeen years now to design me a tattoo of the Zora theme of Link doing a love and peace sign best done by Vash from the anime series called Trigun as that has also played an important part to my teenage years and I recently rewatched with my boyfriend to remind me of how good the series is (although it holds nothing on the manga but has some good voice cast members in it). There’s more than those I’d like in the future and simple cute things such as stars, rainbowd and strawberries but they’re not very geeky.

Which character would you want to hang out with for a day and why, Link, Totoro or Wheatley?

I think Wheatley would be great for conersation especially with the voice of Stephen Merchant but Link would be justified by my love of him to choose over Wheatley especially since it has been a love for two decades now, it would be like a scene from a Shoujo anime where the female main character finally gets to meet the man she’s loved all her life although he’d not have much to say judging by the games although the mangas do make him talk more and bring more character to him, lets just hope he’s not the same Link as from the 1980’s cartoon series. As for Totoro he’d be amazing company but we’d not have much to say really, given that he doesn’t speak any language that I’m aware of, he’d be great for cuddles though.

Where do you live on the internet?

I’m sometimes found on Twitter as NorikoNeko but generally I’m dull lazy when it comes to using websites, my games and reading take priority over my social life on most occasions unless it can be combined with Steam of course!

Tattoo Tuesday- Cowboy Bebop

Cowboy Bebop is perfect in my eyes. The characters, animation, music or storyline truly some of the best that any anime series has ever seen.

I have a major crush on Spike Speigel (and Faye)… is that weird because they’re animated? Wait, don’t answer that. I’m also seriously considering getting a corgi just to be able to name it Ein. And it’s kind of ridiculous how many times I’ve tweeted the words “See you space cowboy…”. I could go on and on but then I’d never get to the tattoos!

I was actually surprised I couldn’t find more Bebop tattoos. So if you come across any or have one yourself you’d love to be featured email me (email below) or comment on this post with a link. I’m constantly adding new tattoos to my Tattoo Tuesdays.

And because it’s blasphemous to talk about Cowboy Bebop without including the theme song, here’s the opening credits for your viewing and listening pleasure, TANK!:
