Tattoo Tuesday: Brian K. Vaughan’s Saga & Y the Last Man Comics

With the return of Saga last week, I thought it was the perfect time to dedicate a Tattoo Tuesday to one of my favorite comic book authors, Brian K. Vaughan!

You’re doing yourself a great disservice if you’re not reading Saga yet. But seriously, what are you waiting for?! I blogged about Saga being my favorite comic book series of 2012 and it hasn’t let me down yet. Whether you fell in love with Yorick, Mitchell, Nico or Alana, we’re all part of the BKV family!

Read more when I saw BKV at NYCC las year here and here.

I include all the information about each tattoo that was available. If you’re interested in your tattoo being featured on a past or future Tattoo Tuesday or Tattoo Tuesday Featurette, email me at jamila[@]girlgonegeekblog[.]com.

He adds, “I got this tattoo after I finished my graduate degree. It is my first and only tattoo. The reasons I picked this image are twofold: First of all, I really like the series and hated to see it go. Secondly, the open straitjacket represented freedom from expectations and freedom to do what I wanted to do with my life. Sappy, I know, but I’m a bit sentimental that way.” [Source]

Tattoo Tuesday: LunaRae’s Sailor Moon & Lion King Ink

Girl Gone Geek Blog Tattoo Tuesday LunaRae tattoos Lion King Yoshi Fullmetal Alchemist Sailor Moon

LunaRae is back with new tats! You may remember her from her Yoshi and Fullmetal Alchemist Tattoo Tuesday Featurette a while back. We’ll she mentioned in that interview getting new ink and now she’s here to show it off!

If you’re interested in being featured in a Tattoo Tuesday or Tattoo Tuesday Featurette please email me at girlgonegeekblog(@)gmail(dot)com.

Tattoo Tuesday Featurette Interview with LunaRae:

What are your new tattoos of and why did you get them?

Girl Gone Geek Blog Tattoo Tuesday LunaRae tattoos Sailor MoonLunaRae: Sailor Mars tattoo – this is the symbol seen in Sailor Moon Super S and Sailor Moon Stars. It took me a while to decide but I liked the idea of keeping my ankle tattoos as symbols. Sailor Mars is my favorite Sailor Senshi. I’m also an Aries, and my name is Rae. Perfect huh? After not being able to see my best friend/sister in over a year (because she had to move away for a while), we are finally reunited and I have my matching [Simba tattoos] this time!

I’m loving your geeky collection of tattoos! Any plans for new ones?
LunaRae:  Future tattoo plans?: I’m debating on The Hunger Games Mockingjay pin for the outside of my left leg. The book series is by far one of my favorites, and the movie was really good as well. The other idea is to do my favorite APC (A Perfect Circle) album design (“Mer De Noms” album). There are always ideas going through my head about adding to my Yoshi tattoos on my back, but I’m still up in the air about it.
Where do you live on the internet?

I’m on Facebook of course, though I keep that personal. I do have a photography page there “LunaRaePhotography“. I am also on Deviantart, LunaRaeB.

Tattoo Tuesday Featurette- My Neil Gaiman ‘Sandman’ Tattoo

Jamila Girl Gone Geek Sandman comic book tattoo Neil Gaiman Fear of Falling 4

As many of you know by now, I’m a very big fan of the writer Neil Gaiman. The entry-level Gaiman drug of choice for me was the comic series Sandman. If you’ve read it, you already know just how utterly brilliant it is. It’s one of those series that’s masterfully blends myth, mystery and mind-blowing stories. It is easily one of my top favorite comic book series. Despite my many Tattoo Tuesday posts I blog about, only 2 out of my 6 tattoos can be called “geeky”. Now I love looking at geeky ink, but for me to decide to get something tattooed on my body (forever), it had to hit me on several levels, and that’s what this quote from Sandman did.

Neil Gaiman Sandman Fear of FallingNow Sandman is a pretty long series, but I remember the day I read “Fear of Falling” vividly. It’s one of the few things I’ve read that gave me actual goosebumps. The quote is, “Sometimes you wake up. Sometimes the fall kills you. And sometimes, when you fall, you fly.” This is a loaded quote for me because I have a mini obsession about dreams, so it hits me on that level easily. But more importantly, it’s a constant reminder to myself not to limit what I do in life because I’m afraid of failure.

A few years later, I finally decided to get the quote inked, but then I had to find a tattoo artist. Because my tattoo was a quote from a comic, I wanted someone who would “get” the significance to tattoo me. That’s when I met the talented lolita geek tattoo artist, Imani. Well, we met on the internet first, as many people do nowadays, through my friends Otakus & Geeks. Finally, at NYCC last year we met in person. I spotted her adorable pastel-colored locks in a sea of cosplayers and it was like we were old friends meeting again. That’s when I decided I’d wait for the chance for Imani to tattoo me. A couple of months ago, she came back to NYC and it finally happened! She’s a talented illustrator and I wanted to use her superpowers to create a custom tattoo for me. She literally sketched out the quote on my back before tattooing. Of course, I couldn’t be happier with tattoo and the experience. Thanks, girl!

Tattoo Tuesday Featurette: Husband & Wife Gamer Tats

Girl Gone Gek- Matt Zelda tattoo
The Amazing Spider-Matt:

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?: I’m Matt, online known as The Amazing Spider-Matt. I’m 29. I have a beard. I’ve been a gamer since I’ve had memories. My first memory is hitting my head on the corner of a table but my second memory is of my Dad setting up an Atari during a thunderstorm. I’m also a comic collector, and have been collecting since I was about five years old.

What is your geeky tattoo of and why did you get it?: My newest tattoo is a Hylian Shield and the Master Sword from Legend of Zelda. I chose this piece because I’m a lifelong gamer and I’ve always been a fan of the game. It’s the third tattoo I’ve gotten, but so far my favorite. Several years ago I got “THWIP!” on my other arm by a friend who was experimenting in tattoo work, and it didn’t turn out great so I had it touched up professionally and then added a red and blue spider next to it.

Any plans for future tattoos?: I actually want a sleeve on both arms. My left will showcase my love of comic books, and my right will be dedicated to all things gaming. I eventually also want a TARDIS on my back (and my wife wants to add ‘Bad Wolf’ tagging to it like it’s symbolically for her).

What games are you currently playing?: We recently purchased an old school NES/SNES console so I’ve been replaying the original Dragon Warrior as well as Legend of Zelda. I’ve also been playing the new Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword on the Wii U. Every now and again I’ve been throwing on Witcher 2 for the Xbox 360.

If you could live in any video game for a month, which would it be and why?: I think just being in the video game world doesn’t necessarily mean I would be a part of the activities, so I’d say Legend of Zelda but I’d probably end up just being a disgruntled peasant. If I were to pick one where I could gain powers, I’d pick any Marvel licensed game.

If you were on a deserted island what video game, comic/book, movie, TV show would you bring?:
Video Game: Travelers Tales Walking Dead Game
Comic Book: Saga. In Brian K. Vaughn’s own words, “It’s like Star Wars, but for perverts.”
Movie: Fifth Element. I can watch that over and over again and never get bored.
TV Show: The Walking Dead.

Girl Gone Geek - Jia Konami Code tattoo

Untypically Jia:

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?: I’m a twenty-nine year old blogger with mental and chronic illness, purple (currently) hair, and an unhealthy obsession with Doctor Who. I’ve been blogging for about seven years. I became a geek the same year I lost my childhood when my sister and I went outside to “play” Buffy the Vampire Slayer and suddenly we were thirteen and playing imaginary things got weird. So instead I obsessed over the show and became an instant Whedonite.

What is your geeky tattoo of and why did you get it?: My newest tattoo is the Konami Code. While I’ve dabbled in games, I wouldn’t call myself a gamer (to insult the true lifelong gamers I know). I have fourteen other tattoos and they all have a personal meaning for me. I wanted to get something to represent my husband (without actually tattooing his name on my flesh) and the Konami Code seemed the most core way to represent a gamer to me. Plus now I can play with the buttons.

Any plans for future tattoos?: Too many. I have a “Chosen” on my back showcasing my Buffy love, but it turned out really, really badly so I’d like to cover that up. The overall project I have in mind is to blacken it out in a cloud of ash and smoke, and have a Phoenix (in Marvel fashion) rising up my back.

What games are you currently playing?: Honestly? The Simpsons Tapped Out on my iPhone. If I’m any type of gamer, I’m a phone gamer. Plants vs Zombies and Angry Birds. I refuse to play Candy Crush, I’ve lost people to that game. Good people. Console wise, I’m a massive Donkey Kong Country addict. I can play Mine Cart Carnage level with my eyes closed.

If you could live in any video game for a month, which would it be and why?: Rock Band? How awesome would that be?!

If you were on a deserted island what video game, comic/book, movie, TV show would you bring?:
Video Game: Rock Band, or anything Karaoke-like so I could have music around.
Comic Book: Can I get the entire run of DeadPool? Is that acceptable? Like, mas trades por favor.
Movie: The Bird Cage. I know it’s not geeky, but I’ve literally made other people HATE that movie because I’ve watched it on a continuous loop for days at a time.
TV Show: Doctor Who. Easy pick.

Tattoo Tuesday Featurette- Matt’s ‘Lord of the Rings’ Smaug Tattoo

photo (1)

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

My name is Matt Naragon, and I have been geeky as long as I can remember. I am an avid game player, a Mac enthusiast, a dnd lover, and a husband of an equally geeky wife.

What is your geeky tattoo of and why did you get it?

The tattoo is of hobbit origin, and shows us part of the famous map and an image of Smaug lurking around the side. I have always loved Tolkien, and the tattoo just naturally suits me. The tattoo was created by artist Brooks Blanton from Wildman’s Tattoo in Ft Wayne, IN. He did a fantastic job bringing this tattoo to life, and remains one of the most amazing portrait tattooists I have ever seen.

Any plans for future tattoos?

Future plans for the tattoo are to bring Gollum into the mix on the other side of the map, along with slowly migrating down to the stomach with more tasteful Tolkien art.

Are you a fan of anything else in the fantasy genre? If so, what?

I am a big fan of gaming, especially Assassins Creed as of late. I also love Star Wars and things associated with it. Oh, and zombies.

If you were going on an adventure, which 5 Tolkien characters would you take with you?

I would definitely take Boromir as my first pick. Elrond would be useful, and young Bilbo would come as well. It would be a toss up between Fili or Kili for fourth spot, and I could have no other than Gandalf taking up the rear (to always save the day).

If you were on a deserted island what video game, comic/book, movie, TV show would you bring?

I would bring along Skyrim for gaming, as it would last me the longest. The Hobbit would be book of choice, and probably movie of choice as well. The TV show would be Rules of Engagement, I’ve been watching that sitcom lately on Netflix and love it.

Where can we find you on the internet?

I am not on the Internet in force much, but you can usually find me on Facebook or Deviant Art. If not there, lately I have been going crazy planning out the perfect Connor AC3 cosplay outfit.

Tattoo Tuesday Featurette: Andy’s Studio Ghibli & Akira Back Piece

Girl Gone Geek Blog Andy's Akira Tattoo3

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Girl Gone Geek Blog Andy Tattoo TuesdayAndy: I’m 32, and living in Wales, UK where I work as a security guard and bouncer, whilst completing a film degree in my spare time. Still make time for my comics and Akira collection – my passion!

What are your tattoos and why did you get them?

Andy: My ‘main’ ink is a large Akira back piece (Notice a theme forming? lol) comprised of the 5th cover of the paperback collection (green Tetsuo), the cover of a Japanese special edition DVD (Tetsuo/cape) and Kaneda with Bike from an ad for the laserdisc. About 45 hours or so, but may add to it. As far as I’m concerned, nothing comes close to the quality of the film and comics. Perfection. On my stomach is a black and grey Totoro homage, with Mei leapfrogging Chibi and Chu. This was my very first tat. In fact, the search for references is what led me to your wonderful blog and your Totoro Tattoo Tuesday! Colour me grateful! :-) On my hip is a work-in-progress No Face from Spirited Away. They all represent my fanatical love of the Anime I grew up with, and a manifestation of my light fluffy side contrasted with my darker preferences, I guess. If I want be pretentious about it. ;-)

We can see that! Any plans for future ink?

Andy: I’m planning a massive studio Ghibli homage for my chest/ribs – bathhouse of the gods behind my NoFace, a Hayao Miyazaki landscape and Catbus behind the Totoro piece to go to my breastbone. A rocky crevice on the opposite hip to No Face to be filled with soot gremlins, with one or two joining procession behind Chibi. A cherry blossom tree atop the rocks, with the main from Princess Mononoke by it, and cherry blossoms falling/caught by soot gremlin below.
That should keep me going for a bit!

I love how you have all the details planned out. If you could have any Ghibli creature as a pet, which would it be and why?

Totoro and No Face

Totoro and No Face

Andy: A soot gremlin (or MANY) as a pet, for sure. Would take the pain out of housework if I could just shout at the dirt and have it run itself away…

Good point, plus, they’re pretty cute. If you were on a deserted island what video game, comic/book, movie, TV show would you bring?

Andy:

Videogame – Skyrim

Comic- What else? AKIRA!!!

Movie – Akira AGAIN. But Spirited Away is a close second.

TV- Babylon 5, it was so clever for its time, and the narrative is EPIC. The Walking Dead, too, please. I’m greedy!

Where can we find you on the internet?

Andy: I’m almost off the grid:-( I don’t have my own blog yet, waiting until I restart my ink. If you wish, hit me up on email or Facebook at Andy-price@live.co.uk
