Blog Crush: Super Space Chick

blogcrushgggb

I met Kristin where most people meet nowadays, on Twitter. Both of us being geek girl bloggers, we had A LOT in common. Then I followed her on Instagram and fell in love with her geek chic wardrobe and most of my comments would consist of lots of exclamation marks and that emoji with the hearts for eyes.

Then one fine day at New York Comic Con, the planets were aligned and Jupiter was in retrograde (whatever that means) and we finally met IRL. Somewhere, at that very moment, a little geek girl bought her first comic book. We’ve been friends ever since and have been on geek girl brunches filled with fancy eggs, fancy mimosas and tipsy visits to Toy Tokyo and Forbidden Planet. She’s a sweetheart through and through and I’m glad to have met her. Oh, did I mention Kristin is practically famous? She’s one of the cast members of Syfy’s new show Fangasm! Even though I can see her face on television on Tuesday’s at 10pm, she hasn’t changed a bit!

Blog Crush: Super Space Chick

kristinsuperspacechickWhy do you blog?

Where to start? There are so many reasons I love blogging!  I blog mainly because I am extremely passionate about my interests and I’ve always loved writing.  It’s so easy for things to get lost when you post on Twitter or tumblr, whereas a blog is an easy way to catalog your thoughts and obsessions.  I love that blogging, especially when reviewing comics, really forces you to think more critically about the story you just read.  I find that it enhances my reading experience and makes me enjoy the story even more.  Plus, it’s fun to share exciting things with everyone else on the internet and connect with other people who have similar interests.  There’s a really amazing, positive, and supportive community of bloggers online and I’ve made such great friends with some of them as a result of blogging!

Favorite blog-related moment?

I have a few!  One of favorite blog related moments was when 801 Red redesigned my SuperSpaceChick site and made it as amazing as it is today.  I love everything about his design and every time I post something I feel so happy.  Another set of favorite moments are when authors I love retweet things I’ve written about their comics.  One of my favorite writers of all time, Jeff Lemire, has retweeted me in the past and I always have major fangirl moments whenever that happens.  I also love the process of blogging in general.  There are days where my plan is to drink a hot cup of tea, sit at my laptop and write for hours.  Those are some of my best days.

What do you obsessed about?

I obsess over a ton of things.  Most of the time I’m obsessing over comics, books, art, or toys, but sometimes I’ll also obsess over movies, tv shows, other blogs, makeup and cupcakes.  Oh and fashion! I absolutely love incorporating geeky elements into my wardrobe and making them into fashionable outfits.  I’ve always been on the more daring side of the fashion spectrum and I’m not afraid to wear loud items of clothing that clearly scream I LOVE THIS (insert comic/movie/book here).

If you were a super villain, what would be your super power? ScreenShot2013-03-20at110457AM_zps84c9b31a

OoOoh I’m so into his question! Everyone always ask about superhero powers, but never super villains, who really are some of the most fascinating characters we read about.  If I were a villain, I would want to be like  Poison Ivy, and have her powers.  I love how she has the ability to control people and plants.  And she’s a hardcore environmentalist.  I’ve been a vegetarian for almost 5 years now, and like Ivy, I’m also very concerned with preserving our environment and all the goings on in the farming industry.  And it’s awesome that despite being a villain, Ivy is able to maintain a best friendship with Harley Quinn.  Their shared villain escapades seem like a lot of fun!

jamilakristinggbnyccWhat video game, comic/book, show and movie would you want to have if you were on a deserted island?

Video Game – Super Mario Brothers (for regular Nintendo)

Comic – The Sandman series by Neil Gaiman

Book – The Harry Potter series by JK Rowling

Movie – Empire Strikes Back

Game of Thrones 80/90s Art by Mike Wrobel

If you’re like me, you always wondered what the citizens of Westeros and Essos would look like in the ’80s and ’90s. Alright, I admit, it’s never crossed my mind. But after checking out Mike Wrobel’s renditions of our most loved and hated (Joffery, I’m looking at you) characters, it’s funny how perfect they fit in that era. I wouldn’t mind seeing an episode or two of them in a totally screwed up version of Full House.

Here’s what Wrobel had to say about his series:

What “Game of Thrones” would have looked like if the action had been set in the 80/90s?

What if swords, bows, spears and armors had been replaced with some NES guns, bats and tracksuits?
This is a fun project i ve been recently starting, imagining all the characters fighting for the throne in a 90s grunge/gangsta era.

You can find Mike Wrobel on…

Etsy Crush of the Week: Miniature Literature & Giveaway

miniature literature logo
I can’t help but imagine Arrietty reading these adorable mini books! Lauren, the owner of the Etsy shop, Miniature Literature found the perfect way for bibliophiles to flaunt their favorite books.
Emily Dickinson Necklace

Interview with Lauren of Miniature Literature

GGG: Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

lauren miniature literatureLauren: I’m a craft enthusiast, Disney nerd, and dedicated flosser. I’m currently in school for Toy Design, which is just as fun as you’d think it’d be.

How long have you been making jewelry?

If you count the paper clip necklaces I would make in my dad’s office as a tot, a long, long time. I started making my own jewelry in high school when I couldn’t find anything to match my outfit, and started my first Etsy store, LB Yours, over my Christmas break last year.

How did Miniature Literature come to be

I don’t know if you’ve ever read (or seen) Roald Dahl’s Matilda, but that was me when I was little (except my principal never locked me in any pokey room), and I haven’t changed much since. I love a good story and the feeling of being snatched up and taken away to someplace else in one. Somewhat conversely, I suppose, I love jewelry, fashion, etc., and I always have a hard time finding pieces that I think are unique. I wanted to make something that told a story. And here I am!

If you had to live in any book for one month, which would it be and why? The Hobbit J.R.R. Tolkien Necklace

What an awesome question! Of course I’d love to go to Hogwarts, but I’m going to have to go with Alice In Wonderland. If you’re going to live in a book, you might as well make it one that’s as far from reality as possible.

Do you have any (other) geeky obsessions? If so what?

I am quite the Disnerd. I’m at Disneyland just about every weekend. This last Halloween, I dressed up as Space Mountain. Not as a cast member- as the actual ride. I made a light up dress and hat that looked just like the building and, I’ve gotta say, it turned out pretty great.

Also, I do love a good video game. I can beat anyone at Mortal Kombat (my girl’s Mileena).

And have you heard Kingdom Hearts 3 is on its way?! *squeal*

If you were on a deserted island what video game, comic/book, movie, TV show would you bring?

Best deserted island ever- where can I buy my ticket? I’m bringing my trusty Sega Genesis, and every episode of Bob’s Burgers and/or The Golden Girls. Is it cool if I also bring my microwave for some Toaster Strudel action?

Where do you live on the internet?

You can find me all over the place! Of course there’s my two Etsy stores, MiniatureLiterature  and  LByours. There’s also my Pinterest or my Facebook ShopLByours!

Giveaway over, congrats Joanna!

Allons-y!

Hubble_universe_1_s640x425

@AboundlessworldWhat inspires you?

Me: Questions that can never be answered, fantastic stories, art, theories about the future, jazz, interesting people and the universe.

donnawindow

@demonweaselWho are your favorite and least favorite Doctor Who companions?

Me: My favorite companion is Donna without a doubt. I loved the relationship she had with the Doctor. She’s also the companion with the saddest story in my opinion. I’m still not over it. Sadly, my least  favorite is Martha. She was a rebound companion and I didn’t feel a strong connection to her. Such a bummer since she’s was a companion of color. I had high hopes!

cous-curry

@xoitsgottabeyou: If you like to cook, what’s your favorite thing to make?

Me: I wish I had more time to cook but I make a good curried couscous with golden raisins and veggies. I use Jamaican curry. My family and friends like it! But I can’t lie, I usually just make pasta.

24-09-01_cowboybebop_big

@demonweaselWhat anime would you recommend to someone who doesn’t watch anime?

Me: For a series I’d recommend Cowboy Bebop, I think it is the best anime series and definitely one that non-anime watchers would enjoy. As for an anime movie, I’d suggest Spirited Away, it’s beautiful with an imaginative, universal story. I love Akira but it might be too much for non-anime peeps.

bug-spray

@AboundlessworldWhat’s your biggest fear?

Me: Serious answer, disappointing my parents. Not serious answer, centipedes. They terrify me. I couldn’t even use a picture of a real centipede because I was too scared to Google one. That’s how real it is.

rocky_horror_image_3

@xoitsgottabeyou: If you were on a deserted island what video game, comic, book, movie, TV show would you bring?

Me:  I always ask this but never have to answer it myself. My answers would probably change depending on how I felt that day but I’d say: Game- Super Mario World, Comic- The Invisibles by Grant Morrison, Book- The Third Policeman by Flann O’Brien, Movie- Rocky Horror Picture Show, Show- Doctor Who.

5610558478_the_big_bang_theory_10_xlarge

@DocWasabasscoAs a geek, what famous Sci-fi / fantasy property do you just not get the appeal of?

Me: Does Twilight count? Because I’m very anti-Twilight and a member of the vampires don’t sparkle club. I’m also not a fan of The Big Bang Theory.

kawaii cheese

Paul LFavorite type of cheese?

Me: I tried to think of some fancy cheese but to be honest I really like cheddar.

beauty-and-the-beast-library

@xoitsgottabeyou: Earliest/longest standing geek interest/hobby?

Me: I’d have to say books. When I was little my parents would read to me all the time which sparked my love for reading. I remember we had this huge Grimm’s Fairy Tale book and my mom and dad would check off each story we read in the Table of Contents. There were a lot of check marks. I love print books (and comics), I love the smell, the feeling of them, the beautiful covers. I dream of having a huge library in my house which is why I won’t get an e-reader.

attack_on_titans_anime_wallpaper__1920x1200__by_abdu1995-d61olzx

Paul SWhat’s your favorite really, really old anime series? Also, what’s your favorite new one?

MeFist of the North Star for old ATATATATATA! And my newest anime obsession is Attack on Titan.
game of thrones sigils

Terrie AI know that you, like me, adore several fandoms. Put them in order, just the top 5.

Me: I feel like I have to pick which child is my favorite. 1. Doctor Who 2. Studio Ghibli 3. Harry Potter 4. Game of Thrones/AsoIaF 5. Comics (Can I just lump them together? lol). Sorry for all of those that didn’t make the top 5, I love you guys too, honestly!
