Etsy Crush of the Week & Giveaway- Ketchupize

When I first wandered onto Ketchupize during one of my weekly Etsy binges, I kind of lost my mind a little at her amazing items. Tina hand-paints absolutely incredible headphones, sunglasses and phone cases. When it comes to geek merch, it’s hard to find something new and interesting that makes you excited and I felt that excitement again when I look at Ketchupize’s Etsy shop. Tina’s shop features everything from Super Mario Bros.  and galaxy sunglasses, to a pokeball and companion cube headphones.

It literally took me a few weeks to narrow down and decide on which item to buy and review. I finally decided on the companion cube headphones for obvious reasons. I waited for the package like a kid waiting for Santa. When my companion cube headphones arrived I literally did a little happy dance. The hand-painted companion cube is damn near perfect. They are extra special because I know that someone spent time painting the details by hand. That someone being Tina. Other than being very pretty to look at, the headphones are great quality and sound.

Interview with Tina of Ketchupize Etsy Shop

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
My name is Tina, I’m a graphic designer and I live in Greece. I love music, video games, sci-fi movies, comics and all kinds of geeky things my parents thought I would grow out of when I reached 16!

How did the Ketchupize Etsy shop come to be?
It all started about two years ago. I wanted to create a unique gift for someone special. It was a pair of headphones and I decided to paint it. The whole process was so much fun and I loved the result. That’s how Ketchupize was born. It allows me to combine all the things I love and it’s really fulfilling, designing functional products for people who appreciate uniqueness and want something different and fun!

I know you do custom pieces for customers, have you had any favorite or unusual requests?
One of my favorite requests was a pair of ”video games” themed headphones. I was contacted by a girl who wanted some custom headphones inspired from her favorite video games. They were some of my favorite video games too so it became more of a personal project and it was so much fun to make.

Are there any upcoming designs you’re looking forward to creating?
I try to come up with new designs as often as I can as it keeps things fun and interesting. My sunglasses line became quite popular during the summer so I thought of customizing normal glasses too. I’m currently working on new designs so I’m looking forward to that, hopefully they’ll be a big hit!

What are some of your favorite geeky obsessions?
My favorite geeky obsession is gaming. I’ve been a gamer since I was allowed near a computer or console. Through the years I’ve tried all kinds of different games and no matter how busy I am I always make time for that. Lately I’ve been playing Diablo 3 and I’m really looking forward to trying all classes in the new Guild Wars 2!

If you were on a deserted island what video game, comic/book, movie, TV show would you bring?
I’d bring my ”Big Bang Theory” box set! It’s my favorite tv series. It’s so brilliantly made I can watch all seasons over and over again and it always makes me laugh.

Deniath- The Flash Sale Site by Geeks for Geeks Relaunch

You’ve probably heard about them and maybe you’re even apart of them. You know, those deals-of-the-day invite-only sites with discounts so crazy you swear it must be illegal but you don’t dare ask. There are dozens of them, most notably Gilt and Rue La La focusing on fashion. But guess what geeks, we have one now too! And it’s name is Deniath.

Deniath is a members-only flash sale site for pop culture, geek collectibles and merchandise. The deals are actually for 72 hours (even better than 24) and up to 70% off! After a brief hiatus Deniath has relaunched with new brand partnerships, revamped blog and a sweepstakes with Newsarama.

I am personally excited about Deniath. As you well know, when us geeks love, we love hard. And we want to own, rep, display and wear those obsessions we love so dearly but all of that fandom can really start to add up. And this is when Deniath swoops in and saves the day (aka our wallets) like a good superhero should. Because at the end of the day, who doesn’t love a sale?

I was able to interview the CEO and Co-founder of Deniath, Wade Sugiyama, check out the interview below.

Special Deniath Offer for Girl Gone Geek Blog Readers!

You can receive a free invite code from Deniath for a limited time. All you have to do is email community@deniath.com before Wednesday, November 23rd at 12am EST and type “Girl Geek Blog” in the subject line. Enjoy!

Girl Gone Geek Interview with Deniath’s CEO and Co-founder Wade Sugiyama:

Girl Gone Geek: What is Deniath’s origin story?
Wade Sugiyama: Prior to Deniath, I worked at WizKids Games, where I had the privilege to work on some amazing games like HeroClix, Pirates of the Cursed Seas, and Star Wars PocketModel TCG. While there, I often worked as an exhibitor at many different consumer conventions like San Diego Comic Con, where I would usually find some new thing to “geek out” on. But, outside of the conventions, it seemed difficult for customers to constantly find new products and services that interested them. In addition, finding something new and cool at a convention was often overwhelming, not to mention an expensive endeavor for a regular consumer.

Then, my partners and I stumbled across private-sale e-commerce and its rapid success in the fashion industry. The model regularly provided customers with brand-specific deals at an entry-level price, making it easier for customers to try different products and learn about new companies that might interest them.  We believed that, given the right geek adjustments, we could build a tailored experience that generated the same excitement, while effectively introducing customers to new geek obsessions.

GGG: Where did the name Deniath come from?

WS: What I can tell you is that it is a made-up word.  The true meaning behind the name is something that we will be revealing to our members over time. It’s derivation has everything to do with our future plans for the site and what we believe we can build.

We wanted to pick a name that we could ultimately define for ourselves and that wouldn’t explicitly pigeon-hole us into any particular type of site.

As a result, we’ve gotten some pretty interesting guesses regarding its meaning and I’m actually intrigued by others’ interpretations of the name.

What does it make you think of?

GGG: It makes me think of a Greek goddess or a fancy Shakespearean way to say deny, which I’m going to guess isn’t what you were going for. So why the brief hiatus?

WS: Like any business, we really had no idea how the market would react to Deniath when we first launched.

We had an extremely small team with minimal funding and activity started to pick up rapidly; which was wonderful, but honestly we struggled to expand as fast as the business was growing. So, we took some time off to get all our ducks in a row, build bigger and better partnerships, revamp and improve the site, hire an awesome team, and prepare for the true potential of this company.

If you weren’t a member before, I think you’ll find it pretty cool; if you were, you only got a small taste of what we will become.

GGG: Some people may want to know why a membership for the site is necessary?

WS: For many of us, the value of getting a deal or being a part of something is heightened by a sense of exclusivity. We want the Deniath experience to be just for geeks, and we want our members to feel like they are a part of something special. Our members-only experience also enables us and our partners to be more creative and exclusive with our offerings.

That being said, our goal is never to exclude anyone.  If you have a friend who is already a member, they can invite you, or you can sign up for the wait list on the site itself and your request should be processed in a few business days.

GGG: Besides catering to geeks, what makes Deniath different from the other deal of the day sites?

WS: Our goal is to become a much more comprehensive and in-depth geek experience rather than just a deal of the day site.  Some of the beginning elements of that include our newly revamped blog, brand specific deals, and our belief in excellent customer service. Upcoming additions to the experience will include a mobile app, Deniath coupon deals, and Deniath Member Services.  We want our members to feel like they are a part of something and that they are listened to and cared for.  We’ve spent an enormous amount of time on the relaunch and we look forward to both our older members enjoying the changes and captivating an entire new audience as our community grows!

GGG: What do you see for the future of Deniath?
WS: We envision Deniath evolving into the ultimate geek experience! Our deals are simply the first step to making that a reality. Over time, we will build the ultimate geek experience, piece by piece, collectively with our members. For now, that’s all we can really say about what we will become. There are a lot of different projects and initiatives in the works, and as we are able to announce them we most definitely will!

Picture of the Week- National Mario Kart League and Interview with the Artist Rodrigo Ferreira

*Mario voice* “Here we go!” This weeks PotW is also the design for the week-long contest I’m having. To see how you can win visit the CONTEST post.

The NMKL (National Mario Kart League) design was created by Rodrigo Ferreira, which combines sports logo design with my all time favorite racing game Mario Kart ( which is also the only racing video game I like). I think the combination is perfect considering the intense competitiveness MK can bring out of a player and the ritual victory dances after a win which are reminiscent of end zone dances after an impressive touchdown.

My brother and I spent an absurd amount hours and days playing Mario Kart on N64, the best in my opinion (this is no way related to the fact that I’m better on N64 than on other systems). You can already guess which was my favorite character to play, I’m partial to pink. Whether it’s the tracks or battle mode, no matter how many times you play it never seems to get old which is why Mario Kart will always hold a spot in my top favorite video games.

Rodrigo was kind enough to answer a few interview questions telling me about the inspiration behind NMKL, his favorite character and item from Mario Kart, as well as advice for aspiring illustrators and graphic designers.
