New York Comic Con 2015: Gimmie The Loot

Here are all of the goodies that I got from NYCC. This post was half done a month ago but life has been kinda crazy so better late than never as they say!

The Divine
girl-gone-geek-jamila-nycc-2015-new-york-comic-con-divine

The Divine is a fast-paced, brutal, and breathlessly beautiful portrait of a world where ancient powers vie with modern warfare and nobody escapes unscathed. (via Amazon)” This is a perfect example of why you should judge a book by its cover. (I bought this from the Kinokuniya booth along with Virgil.)

Eliza Frye

Her art made me stop in my tracks!

Virgil

girl-gone-geek-jamila-nycc-2015-new-york-comic-con-virgil-image-comics

“Betrayed, beaten, and banished by his own, an outed cop fights his way across Jamaica for revenge! (via Image)” Virgil was a thrill ride. Buy this!

Jordie Bellaire is GREAT & They’re Not Like Us

Jordie Bellaire is my favorite colorist. If you read (good) comics, chances are Bellaire is the colorist on one of them. She’s crazy talented, hardworking and to top it all off she’s a super nice person.

About two years ago I was tweeting sweet nothings to @whoajordie about her coloring and she said she was going to the upcoming New York Comic Con and she’d give me a little something. I promptly melted. Sadly, she couldn’t make it to NYCC that year. But she didn’t forget that convo. This year she tweeted at me that she wasn’t going, but Declan Shalvey (another talented artist) was going and she would give him something for me to pick up. I was just beside myself. I didn’t think she remembered a few tweets she exchanged with a fan two years ago, let alone decide to give little old me something.

Fast-forward to the con and I pick up my gift from Bellaire via Shalvey and it’s volume one of They’re Not Like Us written by Eric Stephenson art by Simon Gane and colors by Jordie Bellaire. Now I’m already reading this comic because duh, why wouldn’t I be? But I didn’t have the first volume which I was excited to get. And then to have it blessed by Jordie Bellaire herself was one of the highlights of New York Comic Con. She did a cute little sketch and wrote, “Thanks Jamila”. Thank YOU, Jordie. For real. Thank you. It never gets old when you realize someone you’re a fan of is a really nice person.

Tephlon Funk

girl-gone-geek-jamila-nycc-2015-new-york-comic-con-tephlon-funk

Tephlon Funk is an anime/manga and hip hop inspired comic with plans to come out as an anime as well. TF is one of those projects that I could just throw my money at without knowing much about the story because the art is so dope. This post was supposed to go out when the Tephlon Funk Kickstarter was live so y’all could fund it. But alas, life did its thing, and now the Kickstarter has ended but thankfully it was funded!

Alitha Martinez

Alitha Martinez is a talented artist who has worked for DC and Marvel and we’ve been on two panels together about Women of Color in Comics. Martinez had a booth in artist alley and I HAD to cop her art. I picked up two postcards and a beautiful erotic comic called Foreign: Gifts and Curses: Pillow Book.

Wayward

girl-gone-geek-jamila-nycc-2015-new-york-comic-con-wayward-image-comics

My friend Roshi is reading Wayward and told me she loved it and I should read it, too, so I stopped by writer Jim Zub’s booth in artist alley and picked it up. The cover is filled with cats so I’m already a fan.

Markus Prime

I’ve been a fan of Markus Prime for a while now. I love his creative, race swapped characters. He was at NYCC supporting Amandla Stenberg and Ashley A. Woods’ new comic Niobe (see below). He also did a variant cover for the series. He didn’t have a booth but he was nice enough to bring two prints for me to buy from him the next day!

Ego Rehab by Dave Crosland

girl-gone-geek-jamila-nycc-2015-new-york-comic-con-dave-crosland-ego-trip

While in artist alley, I did my usual “scan for artists of color and women to buy from” and came across Dave Crosland’s booth. I bought his comic Ego Rehab, which is an autobiographical story where Crosland is rescued from lack of inspiration by his adventurous inner child. It sounded like fun so I picked it up!

Niobe: She is Life Print & The Untamed

I stopped by the Stranger Comics booth to support the new series, Niobe: She is Life. It’s written by Sebastian A. Jones, and Hunger Games star and activist Amandla Stenberg with art by Ashley A. Woods based on layouts by Stranger’s Art Director Darrell May. Unfortunately, issue one was sold out but I managed to snag a gorgeous print and and the hardcover of The Untamed. Niobe seems to be sold out pretty much everywhere so lucky you if you managed to get a copy!

Nowhere Men

girl-gone-geek-jamila-nycc-2015-new-york-comic-con-nowhere-men

My love for Nowhere Men runs deep, y’all. Very rarely do I fall in love with every bit of a comic but I did with NM. It was young love, but just as we were getting to know one another, my heart was broken when it went on a hiatus with no mention of a return. I felt like I was left at the alter. Despite its abrupt stop, I continued to tell anyone who would listen to read Nowhere Men. But as they say it’s always darkest before the dawn and it was announced that Nowhere Men was returning.

When is it returning? Not sure exactly, sometime next year. But just like Nana, I’ll wait forever for its return. This announcement, however, came with upsetting news. The original artist, Nate Bellegarde, won’t be returning with it. I’m really sad about this and will probably never get over it, but I understand. For a minute or two, I tried to figure out how to describe the way Bellegarde’s art made me feel, but I can’t. I’m speechless… Or rather wordless. I wish him all the best. He is talented beyond words. I’m looking forward to Dave Taylor joining the Nowhere Men team as the new artist. (Oh, and shout out to David Brothers for being awesome!)

Flamecon – NYC’s First LGBTQ Comic Con

girl-gone-geek-flamecon-featured

I was beyond excited to attend NYC’s first LGBTQ Comic Con, FlameCon! It took place during Pride Month on June 13th at the fancy Grand Prospect Hall in Brooklyn. Geeks OUT presented the con, which is a NYC based nonprofit dedicated to building a better community for LGBTQ geeks.

True Gender Equality

FlameCon had preferred pronoun stickers for attendees to wear which included “Ask Me” and “Them/Their/They”. They also had gender neutral bathrooms. Just two simple additions to a comic con made the 2,200 attendees feel comfortable and welcome.

The Happiest Con

FlameCon is the happiest comic con I’ve ever attended. This all happened because of one simple, but important word, respect. Attendees felt free to be their geeky selves without fear of harassment because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Cosplay

There was A LOT of Steven Universe cosplay so I was basically in heaven.

Special Guests & GaymerX

My favorite special guests were Kevin Wada (artist), Cecil Baldwin (Welcome to Night Vale) and Dylan Marron (Welcome to Night Vale) to name a few! GaymerX had a game room and Nintendo and Atari both had booths.

My Loot

It was pretty hard to not spend all my money, the con was filled with talented creators and vendors. The MC in “Node” by David Rondinelli is basically Sailor Moon if her dad was Batman, so what’s not to love?

I had the chance to meet Hazel Newlevant, editor of “Chainmail Bikini” which is an anthology of comics by and about female gamers. She was super nice and her booth was full of great comics. I picked up her “Poly Glot, Cunning Linguist”. I really loved the honesty and emotional complexity of her short comic.

I couldn’t resist picking up this beautiful Hirsute Heroines postcard set by Hayley Blatte. Just look at the gorgeous purple pit hair!

I’m a big fan of simple black and white art (I blame manga for that). So I knew I couldn’t walk away from Niki Smith’s booth without buying something. “Some Did Rest” was the “depressing” comic as Smith described it. It was inspired by, “the thousands of students killed in the 2008 Sichuan earthquake, and the impact of a natural disaster on a society with compulsory population control.” It is pretty sad, but also really beautiful.

Up With The Sun” and “Friends” are Smith’s LGTBQ-friendly erotic comics. “Up With The Sun” is about a polyamorous relationship with a cisgender woman, transgender man and a cisgender man. “Friends” features a threesome with two cisgender men and one cisgender woman. I’ve read smut and ecchi manga before, so it was nice to read a comic where the eroticism of the story is healthy and balanced. You can read and subscribe to “Friends” and “Up with the Sun” on the erotic comic site Filthy Figments. She has more erotic comics as well!

FlameCon plans to have another con next year, hurray! Follow them on Facebook and Twitter for updates. Oh, and stay tuned for another FlameCon blog post about the ‘Secret Identities: Transgender Themes In Geek Culture’ panel I attended.

My ‘Steven Universe’ Gemsona: Black Pearl

CARTOONNETWORK-StevenUniverse

I rarely call any show perfect but Steven Universe is perfect. The only other show I’ve said that about is Avatar: The Last Airbender (I still have one season left to watch I was a late bloomer, cut me some slack).

Never heard of Steven Universe? Well it’s about the adventures of The Crystal Gems (Steven, Garnet, Amethyst and Pearl) and the people of Beach City. Garnet, Amethyst and Pearl are intergalactic warriors who get their powers from magical gemstones. Steven is a half-Gem and half-human boy from Earth who inherited his mom’s gemstone, Rose Quartz (who was also a Crystal Gem). Steven is still figuring out how to use his gem and spends his time going on adventures with the Crystal Gems and hanging out in his hometown, Beach City.

steven universe connie lion

Connie, Steven and Lion

The series is created by Rebecca Sugar who was the storyboard artist, writer and composer for Adventure Time. It’s the first Cartoon Network show by the studio to be created by a woman. Go Rebecca! Steven Universe isn’t just cute and funny but also smart, deep and incredibly heartwarming. The feels are very strong in this show.

Because I wasn’t caught up with the show for a while I avoided all internet things related to SU. So I didn’t know about gemsonas until I saw the one my brother Myles made, Hambergite. A Gemsona is a Gem persona that a fan creates, usually with fan art. They are original fan made Gem characters. You can have one or many gemsonas. Of course, I wanted a gemsona too! I’m not an artist, but my brother is and he said he would make me one. Perks of being his sister! I described to him my gemsona’s personality, body type, outfit, gem location and weapon and I was blown away at how beautiful she came out. I love that he made her in the Steven Universe art style, too. Check out more of his art on tumblr: skoots-does-a-sketch.tumblr.com. If you want to see more gemsonas, check out the tag on tumblr.

I introduce to you my gemsona, Black Pearl!

My Gemsona Black Pearl [Art by Myles]

My Gemsona Black Pearl [Art by Myles]

Gem: Black Pearl

Weapon: Trident

Personality: She’s a carefree Gem who loves to swim, surf, sing and dance.

Backstory: Black Pearl is from Homeworld but never really felt at home there. Thousands of years ago she came to Earth for typical Gem business but her ship malfunctioned and she ended up on an island in the South Pacific. She finally felt like she was home and has stayed there ever since.

Myles’ Gemsona Hambergite

Gem: Hambergite
Weapon: Giant Rocket Launcher
Personality: Kind of mean and rude but has a soft side that he tries to keep secret.
Backstory: Hambergite is a Homeworld Gem that sort of bought into the goals of galactic conquest from the Gem leaders. Hambergite feels a bit uneasy about all the stuff Gems do to the planets they invade, but he’s just a goon and ultimately wants to keep his superiors happy.

The Beautiful Stuttgart Library

Libraries are cool, and the Stuttgart Library in Germany is one of the coolest. Seriously guys, the entire time I was like, “Ohmygodthisissocool!” I bet I was so annoying but I don’t care. When beautiful books are encased by a beautiful building it’s like cool squared (wow that was corny I apologize).

When I stepped inside the library I felt like a kid. I wanted to squeal I was so excited… Or rather squee because it sounds cuter and less pig-like. You know when you’re playing Pokemon and your Pokemon enters a battle and sometimes does a little shake and wiggle because it’s excited to whoop some ass. I wanted to do that kind of shake and wiggle inside the Stuttgart Library.

The building’s dad is a Korean-born, Germany-based architect Eun Young Yi. The design for the the Stadtbibliothek Stuttgart was influenced by the ancient pantheon. It was born October 2011.

Girl Gone Geek’s Best of 2014

Best Use of Boobies and Philosophy in an Anime- Space Dandy

space-dandy

When I first heard about Space Dandy it sounded a lot like Cowboy Bebop, which is my favorite anime series, so I was all for it. To be honest, Shinichiro Watanabe could make an anime that was just a black screen for twelve episodes I would praise the animation and character development. However, when I saw the first episode of Dandy I thought it was ridiculous. Like really ridiculous. And so was the next one and the one after that… “Well, this isn’t very “Bebopy.” I thought to myself. I wasn’t sure if I liked it. Which made me start to lose faith in Watanabe. Which made me question what was even real. Which made me fall into an existential crisis. But then that crisis was averted when I realized I had to stop expecting Space Dandy to be something it wasn’t. Once that happened, everything changed. By the time the series ended, I loved Dandy just as much as he loves Boobies. (Which is a lot.) When watching Space Dandy, you just have to lose all expectations, relax and enjoy the ride, baby.

Best Reason to Call Out of Work- Bayonetta 2

bayonetta-2-costume

Dat ass, though.

Best Creepy Manga- Nijigahara Holograph by Inio Asano

Nijigahara Holograph Inio Asano Manga 8

My love for Inio Asano grows every time I read one of his messed up coming-of-age stories and Nijigahara Holograph was no different. I dedicated blog posts to Solanin and Nijigahara Holograph because they are that good and I’ll probably do the same for Oyasumi Punpun, which I just finished reading. Asano-sensei is a brilliant storyteller, artist and one of my favorite mangakas. Despite the strangeness and disturbing quality to his stories, there is a unique beauty to them as well. His brutal honesty about humanity forces us to confront things we’re too scared to address. His manga tell us more about ourselves than we may be comfortable with, and with that, he creates a story so beautiful it’s unnerving.

Best Love Triangle to Obsess About- Hirunaka no Ryuusei (Daytime Shooting Star) by Mika Yamamori

hirunaka-no-ryuusei

I’m a sucker for a shoujo romance love triangle, but throw a sensei up in that triangle and I. CAN’T. EVEN.

Smartest Hour On Sunday- True Detective

true-detective

Since time is a flat circle, I can’t wait until my consciousness inevitability experiences True Detective again for the first time.

Best Cowboy in Space Movie- Interstellar

interstellar_2014_movieI was personally offended when I heard some people didn’t like this movie.

The Comic That Was So Good It Was Perfect- Saga story by Brian K. Vaughan and art by Fiona Staples

Coolest World You Really Like But Don’t Want to Live in Because It’s Pretty Messed Up– East of West story by Jonathan Hickman and drawn by Nick Dragotta

East-Of-West-Comics-Wallpaper-

This was a way for me to dedicate a category to East of West because it’s too good not to mention. Seriously, you should be reading this.

Best Eyegasm- J.H. Williams III for Sandman Overture story by Neil Gaiman

jhwilliams3-sandman-overture-neil-gaiman

So the real reason Sandman Overture comes out every leap year isn’t because of the creators busy schedules, it’s because if JHW3 releases Sandman Overture art once a month it will literally rip a hole in time and space and the universe will collapse in on itself.

Best Reason to Judge a Comic Book by Its Cover- The Wicked + The Divine written by Kieron Gillen and drawn by Jamie McKelvie

the-wicked-and-the-divine-covers

When you first see the cover for WicDiv you’re all like, “Oooh shiny!” So you buy it because you like pretty things and figure if the story is terrible at least it’s pretty to look at. And then you realize you’re a really shallow person and get depressed. To distract yourself from this distressing realization you read WicDiv and everything about it is super cool and yet surprisingly smart. Then you stop feeling sad and shallow and pretend that you didn’t just buy the comic for the pretty cover, you bought it for the smart story. I’ll keep your secret if you keep mine.

Best Comic to Read in Public Places- Sex Criminals written by Matt Fraction and drawn by Chip Zdarsky

sex-criminals3Fraction and Zdarsky prove as long as your comic is great, you can make as many sex jokes as you want.

The Comic That Will Take Over 2015- Bitch Planet written by Kelly Sue DeConnick and art by Valentine De Landro

bitch-planet

Feminism means equal rights for all women, but more often than not, the fight for equality is separated between white women and women of color *cough cough* “separate but equal”. Bitch Planet is a punch in the face to patriarchy and I’m so damn happy that all women are included. Thank you Kelly Sue and Valentine!

Where I Freak Out About ‘Sandman Overture #2’

Sandman_Overture_2_Neil_Gaiman_JH_Williams_III_covers

OMFG YOU GUYS! I cannot even deal with how friggin’ gorgeous Sandman Over #2 is! J.H. Williams III is a GOD. I will build an alter in his honor and put food there every Wednesday (because that’s the sacred comic book day). Next door to the JHW3 alter I will build a shrine in honor the letterer, Todd Klein. I will pray to The Endless there and all my dreams will come true.

Williams’ panels in Overture #2 are some of the most creative I’ve ever seen. But he’s been stuntin’ on these pages since Overture #1. Remember that “OMG IT’S A MOUTH! Panel”? Genius!

Well back to #2. I open the first page and there is Daniel Dream looking gorg in all white (Oh hey, boo. *wink*). But peep the panels! I mean can you even call them panels at this point? Well, the pentagon goes all Inception on us because it’s a panel within a panel. The pentagon shape itself probably has some Gaimanesque 4-layer literary meaning. But I can’t figure out because I’m lost in Dream’s beautiful black eyes.

Sandman_Overture_2_Neil_Gaiman_JH_Williams_III

Neil Gaiman’s story is too magnificent to be confined to regular box panels. The rest of the issue is all like, “Panels? WTF is a panel?”

Sandman_Overture_2_Neil_Gaiman_JH_Williams_III_3

Then you skip a few pages and you feel like you’ve taken some hallucinogen. But don’t worry, it’s just what happens when you combine the awesome power of Klein’s lettering, JHW3’s art and Gaiman’s words. You start trippin’!

Then there’s a freakin’ Dream convention which is both brilliant and hilarious. We meet the very first Dream (holy crap!) and all of the creatures he was/is Dream for (holy crap!). Then all of the different Dreams basically realize that they can be, “self-satisfied, irritating and self-possessed”. I love him, but come on; Dream can be such a dick. If you’re like me, you probably spent like 10 minutes on this page because there is so much going on. It’s so overwhelming! But it makes you happy because it’s so epic. I took the time to marvel at every single Dream.

This page is also where Todd Klein shows why he’s an OG. The thing with lettering in comics is you don’t really notice it most of the time because most speech bubbles are “regular”. But Klein’s lettering in Sandman is legend. My favorites are Dream’s black bubble with white text (and sometimes the opposite) and Delirum’s rainbow bubbles and irregular text size.

On the page below, he goes ham and each Dream gets their own unique speech bubble. This was my favorite part of the entire comic. I had so much a fun coming up with the voices for Dream to match the different types of bubbles.

Sandman_Overture_2_Neil_Gaiman_JH_Williams_III_4

Then some really cool things happen in the story. Like we find out Dream is going to see his DAD with the Dream of Cats. OMFGWUT?!

50 Pieces of Beautifully Strange “Welcome to Night Vale” Fan Art

I first discovered Welcome to Night Vale during one of my many endless scroll sessions on Tumblr. I kept seeing Night Vale fan art, so I downloaded the podcast and well, my life hasn’t been the same since.

If you don’t know…

“WELCOME TO NIGHT VALE is a twice-monthly podcast in the style of community updates for the small desert town of Night Vale, featuring local weather, news, announcements from the Sheriff’s Secret Police, mysterious lights in the night sky, dark hooded figures with unknowable powers, and cultural events.”

The writing is quite brilliant and very very strange. There’s a heavy H.P. Lovecraft influence except it’s light on the serious and heavy on the funny (despite the odd and terrifying events that happen in Night Vale).

The Night Vale fan community is filed with some of the most creative people I’ve encountered in any fandom. I originally just wanted to share a few pieces of fan art but somehow ended up with 50… whoops!

Game of Thrones 80/90s Art by Mike Wrobel

If you’re like me, you always wondered what the citizens of Westeros and Essos would look like in the ’80s and ’90s. Alright, I admit, it’s never crossed my mind. But after checking out Mike Wrobel’s renditions of our most loved and hated (Joffery, I’m looking at you) characters, it’s funny how perfect they fit in that era. I wouldn’t mind seeing an episode or two of them in a totally screwed up version of Full House.

Here’s what Wrobel had to say about his series:

What “Game of Thrones” would have looked like if the action had been set in the 80/90s?

What if swords, bows, spears and armors had been replaced with some NES guns, bats and tracksuits?
This is a fun project i ve been recently starting, imagining all the characters fighting for the throne in a 90s grunge/gangsta era.

Artist Alley: Julian Lytle

by Julian Lytle antsheader

I met Julian Lytle at New York Comic Con last year and we’ve became BFF’s on Twitter every since. He’s one of the few people I know who have a love for trap music and comics. Other than that connection, I’m a big fan of his art. What sets him apart from others is how he often mixes urban/street culture with comics and geek culture. For those who are fans of both, it’s a match made in heaven.

Interview with Artist Julian Lytle

It can be hard for some aspiring artists to make the first step towards pursuing art as a career, how did you know that’s what you wanted to do?

by Julian Lytle daredevil_and_elektraWell for me it was something I was good at from an early age. I drew a lot and I got into this PBS children’s show called Secret City hosted by Mark Kistler. Along with Joy of Painting and the debut of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles really helped me to do it. But what really kept me into art really was the people around me. A lot of my elementary school really pushed me in art. Looking back my pursuits in art weren’t that much different than kids who were in sports. Art is what people knew me for. My peers loved what I did and so did the adults so it’s really the only thing I have ever known that I would do. The thing is actually doing it is something else entirely.

As comic book fans, I feel like we all have that one series that changed the way we viewed comics. For me it was Grant Morrison’s The Invisibles. Is there a series that did that for you?

Hmm for me it’s hard because I started off reading more adult fare. I read DKR when I was 7 and Year One when I was 10. I was reading Concrete and Elfquest instead of all those books other kids were reading in 5th grade. So the comic the melted my brain was X-Men #1 by Chris Claremont and Jim Lee. It’s the comic that made me say I want to collect and read comics all the time. It’s what made read Wizard Magazine each month. It’s serious what made me want to draw comic books. Now as an adult and I’ve become more and more jaded it has been Grant Morrison’s work that keeps me interested in Superhero books. I think that right now the whole 10 years or so of what Morrison did at DC is what changed my thoughts on what you can do with the standard ideas of a how to tell a superhero story.

What’s the origin story of your webcomic, Ants?

Guns and Honey by Julian LytleSo I made up the Ants in 9th grade (1994 was a good year) for a comic me and some friends of mine were doing at the time. We never finished the comic because one of us moved away but I still drew them all throughout high school. I always saw them as comic strip characters since before I got in to comic books I was super into comic strips. I high school they never really did anything but just hang out and that’s really all I did. When I was in college and part of the Pratt Institute comic I decided to bring them back out and do strips that along with doing nothing they would also explain urban or hip things to people who aren’t up on that stuff. So after college I’d go through times of drawing it and then just starting over. Then as time went by I got closer to 30 and Biggie’s Real Niggas lyric “Being broke at 30 give a nigga the chills” rang out in my head. Now Ants doesn’t make me rich nor did I expect it but I did need to just do it and not worry about how or try to get syndicated. So I decided to make a comic that was about them hanging out (which is in a meta way about me) while keeping the explaining certain trends and slang for people who aren’t into it and then add in some current events. The current events came from Doonesbury because I loved that comic as a kid until I was an adult so I thought I could put some of that in my comic. I also didn’t want to be as preachy as the Boondocks. While I love it he went in on Bush heavy. I see both sides as worthy of poking. On the internet I have full power over it and I really didn’t see or don’t see a webcomic like mine.

I really dig your superhero + album cover mashups on Deviant Art. How do you come up with those combinations? the_notorious_cable_by_julianlytle-d3fhykh

Well it’s always been in the back of my mine and my homie Sean Causley so we decided to make a Tumblr with these mashups called Longboxes on 22s. For a long period we were going hard in the paint but then life caught up with us. If you listen to rap there has always been references to superheroes or cartoons all the time. We just decided to take it to another level. Also I’m not going to lie Marvel did some 90s inspired covers and they had War Machine live Kurt Cobain in “It Smells Like Teen Spirit” video and I was nah both him and Iron man is Wu Tang this is wrong. Why is it always rock that they characters are turned into? A Drake album fits a pre-new 52 Superboy (Conner Kent) than most other types of genre especially if you read that character for a while. So that’s where it came from and the Tumblr has over 58k followers so I guess some folks really like the idea.

I’m completely in love with your Guns n’ Honey series (and currently have one as my computer wallpaper). Can you share with us how that series came about?

New Guns N' Honey 1It’s actually has a sad beginning. See my mother died in the summer of 2006 and after that I really didn’t draw much at all for little while. It wasn’t until the late fall until I started drawing again using cool picture of women in magazines I bought. From that a cool phrase a friend of mine gave me popped in my head. He said I should do something with it. So the first ones I did were in black and white and they looked pretty good. All my art school buddies that I still talked to thought they were good. So I decided to do some more this time in color. The thoughts behind the early Guns N’ Honey were the image I saw at the time in a lot of the rap videos at the time. They were very glossy; scantily dress women are all throughout, a lot of grandstanding about violence and criminal acts, and a lot of emphasis on high end fashion labels. So I thought what if I mashed up fashion illustration with guns and the words from the more gutter rap music. With it I also enjoyed playing with graphic elements and trying to keep things to very limited colors. As time went on I got into other influences like sixties and seventies movie posters and old crime novel cover illustrations. Also I noticed that females I met at cons or other places seemed to like my pieces not only because of what they looked like aesthetically but also they like seeing a female in that type of stance like the protagonist of something that’s tough. From robbing a bank or getting revenge. Now my plans are to mix up some more of old comic iconography with more trill rap though to change it up.

We have some great Twitter convos about hip hop, particularly our mutual love for trill/trap music and southern hip hop. Is there an old or new hip hop track you’d love to illustrate and put your spin on? By Julian Lytle_Jubilee_sketch

I’ve literally been trying to figure out how to turn Slick Rick’s Mona Lisa into an Ants strip since before I put the strip out. I also in my brain have a reboot of Marvel’s Gen X in head where an issue would just be Ghostface Killah’s “Run” line for line with Synch for GFK’s verse and Skin for Jada’s verse. I have a lot of ideas for comics and series with certain rappers’ catalogues as inspiration though. I can’t say them cause then folks is going to steal them. Because I know they are that fresh. I do plan on one day somehow making a screwed and chopped comic story.

If you could choose three writers (dead or alive) you would love to work with, who would it be?

This is a very hard one because some of my favorite writers are artist themselves. But I’d love to work with Grant Morrison one day. I think I found out about him later than a lot of his diehard fans but it was one of the first times I thought that ideas in my head about superheroes weren’t weird. I finally saw someone not living in the past but using elements of the past and what is actually going on in the world to make fresher comics. I’d love to work with Naoki Urasawa. That man makes the tensest comics in the modern world right now. It’s has so much suspense. I’d like to work with Matt Fraction because going by his twitter and interviews I think he would get and know all my random rap and slang references. Like we could title a comic Trill and he’s know what it meant in an interview, feel me?

Are you working on any upcoming projects?

ElektraRight now I’m still putting out Ants twice a week well when I don’t get overwhelmed by my life and get too tired and miss an update. I hope to have a printed comic version for NYCC this fall and I’m slowly working on laying out a collection of Ants for the near future. The Ants comic I plan have at the cons is the first 20 pages of Ants vs. Blilluminati (or Black Illuminati). Also I’m checking my reserves to see if I can do another comic for the con in a completely different style and structure. I really want to do something digital using HTML 5 on the web and Adobe’s Digital Publishing Suite and get some interesting comic apps out there on both iOS and Android that aren’t tied to Comixology and can use some different techniques besides just screens with stuff popping up and no use of changing panels or text and maybe pop ins. Some cool information or a different way to do note and thought balloons. So much more can happen. I think so of the Batman ’66 stuff Jim Lee announced might do some of the ideas I had so I better hurry up!

Do you have any advice you have to aspiring illustrators?

That’s a really hard question. I’d say take opportunities when they come at you. I’d say diversify and use this new tech world to the fullest. Use instagram, Pinterest, and Tumblr. Start things that make you draw each week along with whatever jobs you get. Really push and get work and get your stuff seen. I’d say that from what I’ve learned in the last few years you need to blend what is thought of as the fine artist with what you expect of the commercial artist. You should attempt to get into group shows and solo shows along with doing great jobs for companies. It’s all about building your brand. With everything being so democratized in terms of creating things it’s more important to cultivate who you are to get people into your stuff. Make a dope identity.
