Etsy Crush of the Week: Red Lotus Designz Featuring Manga & Comic Book Jewelry

When I was trying to figure out which manga and panels I wanted Red Lotus Designz to make into a bracelet for me, I knew one of them had to have Tetsuo’s arm being blown off (because it’s beautiful). Needless to say, I got what I asked for and more! I couldn’t be happier with my custom Akira bracelet. The quality of the manga and craftsmanship are both great.

Interview with Diana of Red Lotus Designz

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

Diana from Red Lotus Designz

Diana from Red Lotus Designz

RLD:
My name is Diana Chin and I’m the co-founder of RedLotusDesignz.  My husband and I run a small business where we create handmade custom order jewelry and amigurumi.  We also specialize in website and app development.

How long have you been making jewelry?

RLD:  I’ve been crafting jewelry and amigurumi since 2005.  It was a form of therapy for me while I was working on my Masters in Internet Technology.  Believe me – writing a thesis on social media and privacy while trying to design and program user interfaces was very stressful!  But it was worth it :) Plus I was able to produce some pretty pieces for me to wear during grad school!

What is Red Lotus Designz’ origin story?

RLD:  Our small business was founded in the Year of the Rabbit (February 2nd 2011). We wanted to create affordable jewelry pieces that are fully customizable and won’t break the bank.  When I first started selling our jewelry pieces, they were mostly anime/manga related.  Etsy had a market for people who sell comic book jewelry.  While I love them, I felt that there weren’t enough upcycled manga jewelry pieces available.  So I started making Sailor Moon earrings.  I felt fortunate (and lucky!) that we were able to make a good amount of sales right after we posted them. Eventually, we started to introduce more custom order listings (currently we have 17), and the option to make photo jewelry pieces.  I’m pretty happy that after two years, we’ve managed to bring a variety of character customizations (from anime/manga, video games, comic books, etc.)!

It brings back to why we named our shop RedLotusDesignz in the first place. In Asian culture (my husband is Chinese-American and I’m half-Guyanese), we believe that the color red symbolizes good luck.  The lotus represents the ability to bloom beautifully in times of disaster.  The “Designz” part, we added the “z” since we were deriving it from the slang term “azn” (that was actually my husband’s idea lol).

Do you have any funny crafting stories? Red Lotus Designz- Comic Book Braceletes

RLD: Well…there was this one time that I did drop all of my yarn supplies while carrying them upstairs to my storage room.  It wasn’t fun when I had to walk back down the stairs to gather all of the amigurumi eye pieces that were scattered all over the floor >_<

Which have been some of your favorite pieces to make?

RLD:  Anything related to Sailor Moon! It was the first anime / manga that I was exposed to.  Even until now, the story never gets old :) I sometimes reread the manga when I feel nostalgic.  Whenever I receive a custom order that features one of the characters from Sailor Moon, I get really excited :D That’s how much I love the series!

If you could live in any anime show, film or manga for a month, which would it be and why?

RLD:  Hands down, it will be Sailor Moon.  What I love about the series is that the storyline doesn’t focus only on the romance between Usagi and Mamoru.  The friendship that Usagi shared with her teammates was even more spectacular.  It goes to show you that with the power of friendship and love, the impossible can be achieved.  Despite the odds stacked against you, Usagi was a normal girl that simply had her strong faith with her friends and the love of her life :) That’s how I feel towards my husband and our friends/family.  Without their support, we wouldn’t went this far with our dream to start a small business.

Where do you live on the internet?

RLD:  Our official website is http://redlotusdesignz.com.  Here, you can find our latest blog updates regarding our shop and website/app development projects. We recently moved our pre made and custom order listings to our main website.  It’s under the Shop link :)
