Picture of the Week- National Mario Kart League and Interview with the Artist Rodrigo Ferreira

*Mario voice* “Here we go!” This weeks PotW is also the design for the week-long contest I’m having. To see how you can win visit the CONTEST post.

The NMKL (National Mario Kart League) design was created by Rodrigo Ferreira, which combines sports logo design with my all time favorite racing game Mario Kart ( which is also the only racing video game I like). I think the combination is perfect considering the intense competitiveness MK can bring out of a player and the ritual victory dances after a win which are reminiscent of end zone dances after an impressive touchdown.

My brother and I spent an absurd amount hours and days playing Mario Kart on N64, the best in my opinion (this is no way related to the fact that I’m better on N64 than on other systems). You can already guess which was my favorite character to play, I’m partial to pink. Whether it’s the tracks or battle mode, no matter how many times you play it never seems to get old which is why Mario Kart will always hold a spot in my top favorite video games.

Rodrigo was kind enough to answer a few interview questions telling me about the inspiration behind NMKL, his favorite character and item from Mario Kart, as well as advice for aspiring illustrators and graphic designers.

Interview with Rodrigo Ferreira

Hometown/location:

I live in Belo Horizonte, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. It’s the 3rd largest city in the country, surrounded by beautiful mountains and people are lovely and nice. It’s a good place to live.

When did you first start designing and illustrating?

Hmmm… as a professional? 11 years ago, but I draw since I was a little kid. I used to spend hours drawing my favorites superheroes and cartoons when I was a kid. I remember when a friend of my father told him to stick some large paper on my bedroom wall and let me draw on it. He said that someday I could be an artist or something like that. I never meant to work with illustration/design but I’m glad I did. I guess it was a logic choice. Actually, when people call me “artist” I think it’s weird. I’m just a guy who loves to draw. That’s it :)

You are graphic designer and illustrator by profession, any advice you have for other artists trying to have a career involving their artistic talents?

Keep always learning and improving your work. Oh, I have another advice: Value your work. Whether you did it in five minutes or in 3 hours. It’s your work.

What inspires you to create art?

Everything. Definitely. Sometimes I saw a garbage can and I think, “Hey, it would be cool to make a design using a garbage can!”. My process is a little bit weird. I usually think about one theme/object/character – like a garbage can – and then I start to make associations. I don’t know how, but it works.

Where did you get the idea for your NMKL (National Mario Kart League) design?

I have an old baseball cap – I don’t know anything about baseball, my dad gave me the cap when I was 16, it’s a Yankees cap – and there’s the National League logo on the side. I found this cap the other day and when I saw the logo I thought that I could make a design using it. I love that logo, it’s so simple and works to every sport! So, I started to think, “What pop culture sport could make a great logo?” and the answer was obvious.

What’s your favorite Mario Kart player and item?

The blue shell! hahaha, not really. I think Luigi and Yoshi are my faves. I think it’s because of the green color :P

What other video games do you love?

I love games but I’m not a hardcore gamer. The ones I love most are the ones that brings me nice memories. I used to play International Superstar Soccer for hours with my cousin when I was young, River Raid and Enduro with my sister on a tiny B&W TV. But I also like GTA IV, Fallout 3, Mario Galaxy, sports and music games – I’m addicted to Rockband 3. I know people think it’s lame to play plastic gears but I can’t help it.

A lot of your illustrations have a nostalgic tone to them, is there a reason why you do this often?

Looking at my answers right now I can see that I might be a nostalgic guy :P But I only noticed this after reading your question. That’s a funny thing… I think it’s completely unintentional. I never though about this.

Do you have any geeky obsessions? If so what?

I love technology. Gadgets, video games, TV’s, computers, I love everything. I’m getting married soon and I can’t wait to start buying cool stuffs to my new home. We’re going to have a room called “Entertainment Center”. It would be like a place to have fun, play games, watch movies and listen our favorite music. I’m so lucky to have a girl who likes the same things I do!

If you were on a deserted island what would video game, comic/book, movie, TV show would you bring?

Does this desert island has a dog called Vincent? Well, let’s see…

Game: Rockband 3 with wi-fi to buy some DLC’s.

Book: High Fidelity.

TV show: The Sopranos.

Movie: It’s so hard to pick one…
