Firefly is one the best science fiction creations ever made. The insanely talented Joss Whedon (Buffy, Angel and the upcoming The Avengers) is the man behind the brilliant space western. Because I was living in Germany at the time it debuted on television (I’m military brat) I only recently started watching Firefly, and of course instantly became obsessed for all the right reasons.
It was a show that stole everyone’s heart, and that Firefly fire still burns brightly in all of the Browncoats around the world. Firefly fandom is massive, and that’s saying something since the show was prematurely canceled after only 1 season. Thankfully Whedon gave us the movie Serenity, which is nothing short of amazing. I wonder if Whedon knew the power his stellar cast, led by Captain Malcolm Reynolds and his crew of misfits, would have on people? We are leaves on the wind, watch us soar.
Enjoy these shiny tattoos while singing ‘The Ballad of Serenity’ by Greg Edmonson.
I include all the information about the tattoo that was available. If you are interested in having me feature your geeky tattoo on a future Tattoo Tuesday feel free to email me at girlgonegeekblog[at]gmail.com.

Here’s what she had to say about her ink, “Finished my feet tattoos this morning! YES! This is my Firefly/Serenity inspired tattoo. Quote by Captain Malcolm Reynolds (@nathanfillion) ‘They will swing back to the belief that they can make people… better. And I do not hold to that. So no more runnin’. I aim to misbehave.’ – Malcolm Reynolds” [Source: Ich bin Casey Tumblr]
Lauren tat of one of the original conceptual designs for the Firefly pilot; illustrated by Tim Earls. This is what she said about her tat, “This is clearly Serenity PRE “Serenity”.. therefore Wash and Book still reside inside. If you look close enough you can see them in the cockpit.” [Source: True.Narcissist Flickr and no power in the verse]
Lazyjay‘s Serenity ink above. They also have tattooed: “You can’t take the sky from me” on left upper inner arm, “No power in the verse can stop me.” on left outer arm and “Also, I can kill you with my brain.” on right outer arm. [Source: TV.com]
maydaymaidez: “Today I got these two done. They are from a TV show that was cancelled a while back called “Firefly”. It’s a sci-fi western that brought me out of depression a few years back. The writing is the logo and the chinese means “Serenity” which is the name of the ship. It means a lot to me and will forever show my support for this brilliant show.” [Source: Fuck Yeah Tattoos]

Jessica Melusine: “Kaylee Tattoo done by Mulysa Mayhem at This tattoo on my right forearm was done at the Marked For Life convention in 2006. It was done by the amazing Mulysa Mayhem (http://www.mulysamayhem.com) with art from Jo Chen’s Kaylee cover for the Serenity comic series. Beautiful art from both–I’m honored to have Kaylee forever.” Read more of her tattoo story here. [Source: Flickr]
The two tattoos below were submitted by two fabulous Browncoats and Girl Gone Geek fans!
Emailed to me to me by the super awesome fan Jenna McCoy! This adorable Jayne and Hello Kitty mashup tattoo was made by Nathan Heinrich at Blackstone Ink. Jenna said this about her ink, “I got this one because Jayne was always my favorite. I’m Vice-chairman of the Southeastern Browncoats and since I had other Hello Kitty mashup tats on that leg, I need Jayne right on the front :)”
Sheelagh: “I’m one of the founding members of the
Alberta Browncoat Society in Edmonton, Alberta.
Edmonton is, of course, Nathan Fillion’s home town. The tattoo is based
off a scene from Serenity (the barn swallow) with slight modifications to
Serenity (my tat includes a small outline of the province of Alberta and
the Equality Now logo).
As you can imagine, I’m a huge Firefly/Serenity fan but enjoy most of
Whedon’s other works as well. The connection with Firefly is strongest
most likely due to the nature of the Browncoat community. The charity work
and camaraderie is an amazing thing to be a part of.
The artist was Cory D, co-owner of Off Whyte Tattoos. Fair warning:
their website is pretty old and crappy but their shop is glistening clean
and the artists employed there are pretty damn shiny! And talented too.
They tend to update their FaceBook page more often than their website.
Cory’s done some other work for me (the Courage tattoo in his FaceBook
photo gallery is one of mine) and we’re busy planning a Dr. Who themed tat
that I’ll likely start having work on in a few weeks.”
