Tattoo Tuesday- Neil Gaiman’s Sandman

This weeks Tattoo Tuesday features Neil Gaiman’s Sandman comic book series.  I found some beautiful tattoos of Dream, The Endless, other characters, quotes and symbols.  I’m currently reading the Sandman series now and think it is pure genius.  It also feeds the ravenous fascination I have about dreams, my obsession with literature and my growing comic book fangirlness all at the same time.  Although I’m not done with the series yet, I could seriously see myself getting a tattoo of a Sandman/Gaiman quote in the future.

Check out previous Tattoo Tuesday’s here.

UPDATE: After @neilhimself RT’ed this post (yes, I fainted!) I got an enormous amount of views which just sent me over the moon!  A lot of you wonderful Sandman fans included links in the comments section below of their own Sandman tattoos which I loved to see.  So I wanted to make sure everyone else looked in the comments section and checked those out as well. There’s some really good ones! I really appreciate everyone adding their tattoo in the comments! Everyone else feel free to share your Sandman ink below!

I included all the information about the tattoo that was available. If you are interested in having me feature your geeky tattoo on a future Tattoo Tuesday feel free to email me at girlgonegeekblog[at]gmail.com.

ArmChairJ‘s Tattoo of Delerium of The Endless. Tattoo done by the late Suzanne Fauser at Creative Tattoo in Ann Arbor, MI, in 1995. (done in 1995)

What Armchairdj said about their tattoo, “Again, I went for the “direct translation of a comic-book panel,” this one by Jill Thompson, from the Sandman arc “Brief Lives.” (She was a little freaked out when I showed it to her at a signing at Chicago Comics years later.)

Suzanne was a true artist, and this is one of my favorites. She did more to translate the original art into a tattoo-approriate configuration. She simplified the pattern in the dialogue balloon, which is much more tie-dyed in the original. She also translated the color of the shadow on Delirium’s face from grey to a freckle brown. Otherwise, she kept enough of the original flavor that it totally looks like Jill’s work – Tori Amos-style lips and all.”

“From Neil Gaiman’s Sandman Vol. 6: Fables and Reflections. “Fear of Falling”

“Sometimes you wake up. Sometimes the fall kills you. And sometimes, when you fall, you fly.”

If I’m going to put words on my body, I want people to be able to read it easily and understand it. This phrase truly speaks to me. It inspires me every time I read it, and I want it to inspire other people too. I decided to have it tattooed on my body so everyone I meet, whether Sandman fan or not, could draw inspiration from it as I have. :)”

What Will said about his tattoo, “This was my first tattoo, though I’ve been thinking about it for … well, a long time. The phrase comes from Neil Gaiman’s “Sandman” series, from Delirium’s sundial and means “time is broken.” For me, it was always a play on having no sense of time, but realizing that memories are persistent beyond any real sense of time. I can remember what happened ten years ago better than I can what I did for lunch yesterday. I think most people are like that. Having it just above where most people wear a watch is just part of the joke.”

“You don’t have to stay anywhere forever.” Volume 9: The Kindly Ones.

What Preeti said about her tattoo, “Gaiman’s a favorite of mine, and the quote just really struck me, I’ve got a bit of wanderlust and want desperately to see everything and live everywhere. Not to mention, Lucifer says it to Delirium and barring Dream, they’re my two favorite characters.”

  1. I feel compelled as a nerd to inform you that the hippogriff, wyvern, and griffin do not guard the gates of horn and ivory. They guard Dream’s castle. But putting that aside, amazing post! The translations of the characters onto skin are all gorgeous <3

  2. Absolutely beautiful! I read these comics in highschool and have been a Gaiman fan ever since. Delirium was always my favorite. These will influence me when the time comes for me to get my next tattoo.

  4. Very good to see you crediting the tattoo artists now, keep it up babes!

Sandman is brilliant, but I have one problem with it- once you buy the first volume, you can’t stop and end up broke. Damn!

    1. Yeah I felt really bad afterwards. I didn’t realize that just putting the source link wasn’t enough. It takes me a bit more time but I try and include all info I can about the tattoo and artist. Thanks again for that! And Sandman is making me broke too! lol

  5. My first tattoo was actually the Key To Hell. I got it on my 18th birthday. It’s on my upper back between my shoulder blades right below my nape. The artist’s name was Riz and he worked at Starborn in Las Vegas, Nevada.

My third tattoo is actually a mural that covers my entire back. The artist was an apprentice but he shared a huge love for Sandman like I do, so I wanted him to do the artwork and inking instead of the more skilled artist. It still needs to be colored/shaded, and re-outlined, but it’s a huge piece and will take some time. This is just the first outline – 8 hours (like I said, he was an apprentice, so it took him longer.)

All of the Endless are there – even Destruction. Matthew, Barnabus, Goldie from Preludes and Nocturnes/Kindly Ones, and even the fish Borghal Rantipole from Kindly Ones are there as well. I have a pile of books and round glasses sitting on top to represent Lucien at the bottom left, and a Jack-o-lantern with smoke for Mervyn on the bottom right. There is a Rose at the very top of the gate/arch for Rose Walker, and they are standing on a green hill for Fiddler’s Green. The castle is floating in the background, and Dream is clutching his mask. Desire is holding a heart – their realm. Each Endless art style/clothing is taken from a different part of the series.

I can’t wait to get it finished. =) Thought I would share them both!

  7. Here’s a link to my Del tattoo. A little blurry. On my right leg. I plan on getting a quote from Mr. Gaimen on it once I can afford it too. Taken shortly after it was done. Colours are much brighter now.

    1. The person actually talks about that if you click on the tattoo for the source link. They are self inflicted scares and they used that quote for that part of their body for a reason

  10. I have a half sleeve dedicated to the works of Neil Gaiman, work done by Neil England of Paradox Tattoo in Dartmouth MA. I actually got to meet Neil Gaiman a few months ago and showed him my tattoo (he called it “glorious”!!!) I was lucky enough to get him to autograph my arm and got it permanently inked that same night! :) Here are some images for ya:
