I’m super excited for Sucker Punch and you should be too! In a nutshell the director Zack Snyder (300, Dawn of the Dead, The Watchmen) described the film as, “Alice in Wonderland with machine guns.” That alone should get you hype but if it doesn’t here’s the rest of the synopsis (from wiki):
“Set in the 1950s, it tells the story of Baby Doll (Browning), who is trying to hide from the pain caused by her evil stepfather and lobotomy. She ends up in mental institution and while there she starts to imagine alternative reality. She plans to escape from that imaginary world but to do that she needs to steal five objects before she is caught by a vile man. She has 5 days to escape before being lobotomized. In order to cope with the situation, she enters the hyper-real world of her imagination, and the lines between reality and dream begin to blur. She is joined with friends who are inmates from the institution. Lessons learned in the said fantasy world could help the girls escape their real-world fate.””
You’re probably wondering why I included this in Zombie Week. Well there’s zombies in it of course! Zombie German soldiers to be exact. The posters look great and it seems Vanessa Hudgens is not trying to stay in the good-girl HSM box, good for her!
“There are dragons, mechs, ninjas, zombies, fish-net stockings and tight clothes on sexy ladies, guns, samurai swords, and dance numbers.” (via Collider) Before you walk away because of the “dance number” bit here’s what Collider explains the dance numbers,
“Gugino also explained that each character has their own kind of dance that is a reflection of self. The way it’s woven into the story is that Gugino “real” character is a doctor who provides “sound therapy”. Malone said the dances are a good way to express the character’s inner turmoil. Furthermore, the dances were done in a Moulin Rouge-like hall, and it was filled with real people that made the dances feel like live performances.”
Doesn’t this sound like it would be a kick-ass graphic novel?!
